The water in our apartment building was turned off from the 23rd-27th of December. (yes during xmas!) A pipe had burst and it needed to be repaired. Are they requiered by law to not charge us for rent for those days? I was away, but DH was home and he couldnt stay there because there was no water at all. The had told everyone to use the showers and toilets in the adjoined buildings locker room during that time, but 2 toilets and 2 showers for over 500 people was a little unrealistic. And anyone that planned to have xmas at their apartment had to cancel it. Im wondering if they will take off some of our rent...

i remember when something similar happened and they had to turn the hot water off, and nothing was taken off.

Re: rental laws
I am pretty sure that when its not done maliciously but under emergency circumstances that they dont have to give you anything- although if they are smart and want to keep their tenants it would be smart of them to give something
either way ask the management office- you never know

Dh was lucky his parents live close by. but there are people with little kids and other people who had to stay in hotels all week. Some people had out of town people coming to stay and had to move them to a hotel. It was a big mess!

we dont have control of our heat, but a tenent broke into their heater and turned it off. And it froze the pipes and they burst. So they had to repair them and it took 5 days. So it wasn't the management companys fault, but it really put out a lot of the tenents and ruined some peoples holidays.

WOW that really s*cks. Having no heat in the winter and during the holidays might be different circumstances, so i would ask.

Re: rental laws
I don't think they have to give you money back because the apartment was still liveable and they had other 'accommodations' for bathroom and shower. Maybe not ideal but still an option.
I couldn't live in my old apartment for almost a month and I could have faught the landlord for money back -- but we were trying to break our lease so it wasn't worth the arguement.
However insurance did cover our hotel bills AND when we stayed with my parents they covered both of our gas bills because the commute was further.

Re: rental laws
I think that they wouldn't be required to give you a rent credit bc the problem was caused by another tenant,,,I'm not positive though.
