Very sweet sentiment, but not why europeans/americans wear our ring on the 4th finger.
This is something i read over a year ago..... so some of this info might be a smidge off, but you get the point.
Originally wedding bands were worn on the thumb in europe. They moved to the 4th finger because that finger, if I recall correctly, could not move without moving the 5th finger too... symbolizing the bond between the spouses. The ring was on the right hand becuase that hand was more godly than the left. Many northern european catholics still keep their ring on that finger (us included)
During the protestant reformation, they switched the ring to the 4th finger on the left hand, becuase it was closer to the heart. Since most Americans are protestant, it remains on that finger to this day.
