The worst part of changing your name is waiting on line. Everything else is as easy as pie!

getting married only allows you to change your last name.. so if your maiden name is X Y Z and your married last would be A, you can change your name to X Y A, but if you want to make it X Z A - it is considered a name change in itself.. there are some papers you have to fill out, get ok from a judge, and then put it in a newspaper and all that stuff.. will take about a month or little more if you are on top it to get the offical paper work done and then you change it everywhere else.

I didn't know this... why does it have to be put in a newspaper?

You are supposed to legally announce your name change (not getting married and changing your maiden name to your married last name) and the court gave us a couple of newspapers to choose from. The newspapers know the drill, you fax them the info, pay by credit card, they will send you all the info in 2 weeks and that was that. I don't live in Long Island, I went to a NYC civil court, so not sure how things would be in LI
