DH and I adopted an 8 year old terrior from little shelter. She is so sweet, loving and is totally trained.
Well she was fine for the first month or so, now she has accidents in the house every so often. It is odd b/c she can go 8-10 hours without being walked, then sometimes we will walk her - she does her business but an hour later she pees in the house Any ideas?
I am thinking maybe it has something to do with being in a kennel where they just 'went' instead of being walked. She doesnt let us know when she needs to go either.
DH bought wee-wee pads to try to prevent accidents and she does go on those when she goes in the house thank god.

Re: rpst - pet training issues
Do you have a crate? Thats how we trained our dog. She probably doesnt understand not to go in the house. Leave her in there and take her out to go to the bathroom and then put her back in. They will not go where they sleep so she will learn to hold it.
Also, if you train her on wee wee pads she will get confused on what to do. Just keep taking her out constantly. You have to reallllly watch her so she doesnt go in the house. If they do it once its like starting from the bottom again

right, see we do have a crate but we cant leave her in it all the time, that is just inhumane. She is trained fully - I am thinking maybe it has to do with her becoming territorial with our cat around?

I have a rat terrier, i had this problem with my dog in my old apartment, but not int he new one, i think it was becouse i was changing the times i walked her. also make sure she doesnt have a UTI, they can get that if they hold it for a while

we have a similar problem with our dog, who is 7 months old now. We got her when she was around 2 months old, and she learned to go outside pretty quickly. After the first couple of days she didn't have any more accidents in the house. Now she can typically hold it for around 8 hours, but last week she went in the house a couple of times. I think she realizes she's supposed to go outside though, because she goes right by the door, but I guess she just couldn't wait. Do you always give your dog the same amount of water? I think that our problem might have happened because DH and I were giving her too much water. Now we've been limiting it, especially at night. Good luck!

My dog started going in the house after we took her to a kennel for more than a few days. And it was a new kennel. I think it's a fear thing - so I totally think it can be a territory thing, too. (Funny thing is, I left her at the kennel for 12 days when we were on our HM - two days more than it should have been because I got sick right as we were supposed to come home - and she hasn't peed in the house ONCE since we've been home. The other times she was at the kennel, it was for 1-4 nights! DH thinks she thinks she went to the kennel because we were mad at her for peeing, and now she gets it. I don't think dogs think like that, though ... )

while she was at the shelter, she drank from a water bottle, like a gerbal (i know, odd) so we have continued that at home. she has access to water whenever she wants it, maybe she is drinking too much. maybe we should switch from the bottle to a bowl that we can take away at night or during the day when we arent home.
