Re: Salem
Try looking in Peabody, Danvers or Marblehead. That's what FH and I did a few years ago when we went to Salem during the fall. I think we stayed at the Holiday Inn or Days Inn. Either way, the room was fine and the drive into Salem wasn't too bad. There are all day parking garages in Salem, so it wasn't too bad.
Also, it doesn't hurt to check back with the B&Bs in Salem. I've heard of people getting lucky with cancellations.

Re: Salem
I booked three nights at the hawthorne hotel which is in walking distance of many attractions, at least according to the site. I'm excited with the AAA discount we saved about $200!

I stayed at the Hawthorne a few years ago and really liked it. It's an old hotel, so the rooms are small, but it has that old charm so it's pretty cool. I think they visited it on an episode of Ghost Hunters too.
