Re: Skinny B!tch
The book is actually a load of crap. My good friend (BIL's girlfriend) is friendly with the authors. She's actually mentioned in the acknowledgements (sp?). Anyway, the authors are hard-core vegans and intense animal activists so it's all just a method to push their animal activist propaganda. She said half the 'research' used for the book wasn't even real research, so take it all with a grain of salt, it's an entertaining book definitely, but don't get too caught up in their propaganda.

It's funny cause I feel like I've said that a million times as well so I was almost not going to respond but then I feel like, people should know the truth so that they're not influenced by something so......skewed, to justify one's own agenda. If anyone still wants to follow it, then def. more power to them, but they should know the whole story behind it.

I just read it and went veg May 1 after reading it...I can totally see the agenda the authors are pushing, its very obvious. And no way could i even consider being vegan thats just insane. However, the points they make about animal cruelty I just can't ignore. Even recently this was in the news with horrific footage from a slaughterhouse in California and meat going to public schools. I think that was my main reason for switching my diet.
Its been a month so far, so we'll see what happens.

Re: Skinny B!tch
I read it and have been a vegetarian since- going on almost 2 months! I was never a huge meat eater, so it came pretty easily!!
I have read further and researched more into the disgusting meat industry and I'm hapy with my decision. I constantly felt like I had to justify my decision to family and friends so I figured i might as well become educated on the topic.
Other great reads are....
Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment Inside the US Meat Industry By Gail A. Eisnitz (Loved this one)
Prisoned Chickens, Poisoned Eggs: An inside look at the modern poultry industry By Karen Davis ph.d (In the middle of reading this one now)

I agree with you here. The book is mostly agenda pushing but they do have points about cruelty to tha animals. I do wish they didn't mistreat them-bad enough they are going to die anyway, but I will admit to being a bit whatever in terms of eating meat.
I made the choice not to eat much because I am just not a huge meat eater to begin with. But I can't say its because I don't want to kill them. We're at the top of the food chain as harsh as it sounds. If we were not, we'd be lunch for something else. Its just survival.
BUT I dont like that they torture them with awful conditions. Just make it quick.
My issue with vegans is that the ones I have known personally push it so hard and on their kids too but studies show kids need more nutrients when they're growing. They can get most of it from food but no all and they generallly don't eat enough to begin with. Then you need to push them full of supplements which is even mroe difficult.
But if people vhoose this lifestyle and are happy with it, more power to them.

good for you! I was a pretty big meat eater so all my family and friends are up in arms over it. And yes, i'm tired of explaining myself and my decision. all i care about is that dh supports my decision, I didnt force it on him or anyone else. I would never be in someone's face about it, it's my choice.
keep on keepin on Marie!

DH is constantly teasing me but he supports my decision 100%. My family however like to continually tell me its a phase....I think not! I also do not force it upon anyone and do not preach BUT if someone is going to challenge me on the topic, now at least I have the knowledge to back myself up!!
How are you doing as a vegetarian?? We're newbies together!!

We are totally!! I'm doing ok with it, I only had one real temptation with some cold cuts at dh's birthday party, but other than that i'm like 'meat eww' so its not that hard at all....I even called an am talk show with the doctors/nutritionists to find out about supplements. They emphasized adding a multivitamin and B12 vitamins as well as yearly bloodwork(i have to do it anyway for my job) to make sure everythings balanced.
The only problem is I find myself snacking on things I shouldnt like chocolate or chips from time to time, but i've still managed to loose 7 pounds and I feel so good in my clothes!!! Yesterday I went shopping at an organic grocery in Queens so I bought 'good' snack stuff. I hear Trader Joe's rocks too....
