So do you plan to stay home, work, or

Original post by JimmysBride

work part-time, or work from home once the babies come? And if you are planning to stay home -- how long are you planning to stay home for -- till the baby's in pre-school? Kindergarten? 6 mos?

I answered full time work, but actually my top choice, if financial issues were irrelevant, would like to work part time. I have worked really hard with a return to school for a career change to get to where I am professionally. I have a lot of respect for people who are SAHMs (my mom was) but I am npt sure that I could be home all day, every day with the kids.

My job is the more stable of the 2, with the better benefits and more time off. It doesn't make sense for me to give it up. DH might be able to work from home with more flexible hours than me. But.....we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Unfortunately, unless we move, which I don't see happening, we will both have to continue to work if we want a house.

My main dilemma, however, is finding affordable and reliable daycare. THAT's what throws me into panic mode

Omg - exactly!

I can imagine your concern! You are already preggo, so I know this dilemma is in the forefront of your mind as we speak. As wonderful and joyous as being pregnant is, there is just so much to consider when thinking about going back to work, being a SAHM - esp when living in NY its so tough

Me, I am a worrier by nature. So I sweat just thinking about it. We aren't quite at TTC yet (though I wouldn't be sorry at this point if got preggo ) but still I am so very unsure what we will do when we have children and I have to go back to work. I am not even sure I can depend on my Mom, even though she is now retired and the offer is kinda/sorta 'out there. But I truly doubt she wants to be tied down 5 days a week with an infant -- and I cannot blame her

I'm sure if someone had the perfect solution to this, they'd let us know right?

we haven't really worked this out yet since we are not ttc for a few more years, but i would love to stay at home at least for the first few years. if that's not possible i'd love to be able to only work part-time or work from home. one thing we do have going for us is that my sister and bil own a daycare/preschool so we'd have a safe place for them to go when the time comes. of course that's assuming we live near there!

My plan is to be home 3-4 months then go back to work PT, maybe 3 days a week, 2 weeknights and I weekend day. Since I am in healthcare I can do this.
We do not plan to use day care. We will work out schedules out and my mom will be nearby.
We are fortunate that we don't live in NY and while we could get by OK on DH's salary I feel we would have to sacrifice too much and so would our children so PT work for me it will be. I can also pick up extra shifts here and there for school clothes, vacations, etc. I am not good at sacrifice so hopefully this plan works out financially for us (of course I want my kids to have the best of everything.... )

Both DH and I are writers, so when the kids come we hope to be financially solvent enough to BOTH work at home.

Well, I would love to be able to stay home, but I am not sure how this will work out. I at least want to stay home for a year or two. Time will tell...

Fortunately, I have enough sick leave with my job, that I can be on maternity leave for about 6 months. We'll re-evulate then. To stay here, we need 2 salaries, even though DH (and myself as well) feels it's important to stay home w/the kiddies.

I will definitely be going back to work when the baby comes in May. I have absolutely no choice. Hopefully when DH graduates law school next year he'll find a good job. So when we have #2, I could stay home longer maybe the 1st yr.

For me, I'd rather be a SAHM when the child is in grade school bc I feel that's when they are most influenced. We were lucky to be watched by our grandparents while our parents worked when we were babies. But when I was in 7th grade and my brother in 2nd, my mother stayed home with my youngest brother who was 3. I used to hate the fact that my mother was home bc I couldn't get away with stuff. She didn't go to work until my freshman year college. Now that I am older, I can appreciate having her home bc it definitely kept me in line and it was nice to have dinner ready and someone to help me with my homework.

I will stay home for a few months but then back to work... but we aren't planning on children for at least a few years so I am sure we will discuss this topic further when the time comes...

I'm due in August and unfortunately I'll have to go back to work full time in order to pay our mortgage/bills...the baby will have to go to daycare

And trust me...I tried to figure out if I didn't work FT how to make the $$ for bills...my DH was hoping that I might want to work the corner
