so I am also toying with changing careers...

so I am also toying with changing careers...

I dont want to leave teaching, but I am not getting any calls except for to be a lunch/recess monitor for 2 hrs a day @ $8/hr. It would actually cost me $$ to work. It would cost more $$ for the gas to drive back & forth to the school than I would bring home, plus it's not a real teaching position - it's watching kids at lunch & on the playground. I make more money staying home & collecting unemployment...sad to say.

Eventually though I know that unemployment will run out & I need to come up w/ a plan...and soon. I have been toying with the idea of becoming a wedding/event planner. There arent many up in my area, and I know it's something that I'd at least enjoy doing & that there is a demand for it if you market yourself correctly. Plus the fact it's the type of job where I could work as much or as little as I want/need to & when it comes time for DH & I to have a baby, I can pcik & choose when I want to work & take time off instead of having to ask for it from some higher up.

I am really depressed though b/c I know in order to do this I will have to start selling off all my teaching stuff. It's hard b/c I have like 50 boxes worth of books, materials, supplies - all accrued from over 8 years of teaching. There are a few boxes of children's books that I wont sell b/c I want to save that for our own child someday. I just really hate giving up my dream of being in the classroom, but I also have to be realisitic - there are so few teaching jobs out there, and the cold hard fact is - is that there are also other teachers w/ more years exp than me out there looking too. I know they say 2012 is supposed to start the influx of the next level of retirements, but I cant wait another 2 years being jobless and not having some money for us & our expenses as well as having some spending money for myself.

So I'm at a crossroads, and afraid to stay on one path, or venture onto another.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Whatever you decide to do will work out for the best. It maybe hard but maybe you'll end up loving your new project/job even more.

I think wedding planner is a great idea!! laurie you would be soo great at it!!

just because you arent teaching now, doesnt mean you should give up your dream of being one!! keep applying etc. but in the meantime do something like wedding planning...

who knows you might love that more! and wanna stick with it, if not ,then it will pay some bills for now, and then as soon as you find a teaching job you can concentrate on that.

Laurie, I too have been thinking about moving away from teaching. It has been a very difficult decision and one that I still haven't made. What i have decided to do is to get hooked up with an event planner/wedding planner to work part time for a while to see if it is smething I think I would be good at and love or something that just seems fun in light of planning my wedding! Is there anyone around you that you can get in contact with just to test the waters? I wuold hate to see you throw away your teaching dream just because right now is not the best time ya know?

Either way you will be great at whatever path you decide to go with!!

Sorry you're so unhappy, but it's totally understandable.

I'm considering the same thing since I've been waiting for months for my NC licensing to come through and I have no idea when that will happen. DH is trying to encourage me to go back to school to become a teacher, but with a hundred thousand into my law school education I'm hesitant. Plus hearing all the teachers' stories lately makes me worry it would all be for naught anyway.

2012 isn't that far away if you were to consider trying something else for a few years and then go back to teaching once jobs open up. This is a great time to try something totally different and see how it goes. The most important thing is for you to find something that makes you happy (of course while being able to live on it).

I wish you all the best.

The event planning thing seems cool, you wont have to totally give up the teaching idea if you do that either. Maybe once things open up you could even do both! And like others said, maybe you won't even miss the teaching. There is a lot more over lap in the two careers then some people might think! Things will work out for you in the end no matter what you end up doing!!

ed. b/c I can't spell

Why can't you pursue the wedding/event planner career while still applying to teaching jobs? Then you can pursue whichever one takes off first!

Re: so I am also toying with changing careers...

I can still technically pursue teaching jobs while doing the event planning thing - but in order for me to do so, I still need to sell my stuff to get myself business cards, set up a website, & what other misc fees I would have to lay out for a business name, etc. Plus DH has been upset w/ me for using the downstairs as storage for all my things. I do have A LOT of stuff, & I would also love to have our downstairs back - but the thought of having to sell what took me 8 years to accrue - & I'll never get anywhere near what I paid for everything I bought over the years...
