I've never read the book, but I do remember hearing bout how vaccines are a probable cause of autism quite a while ago. Back then, I kind of assumed that by the time I'm ready to have kids, things will be more figured out. But now here I am all these years later, married and very likely to get pregnant within the next 2-3 years and NOTHING is proven yet. It definitely does scare me!!! I remember my mother telling me that when me & my sisters were little, she always took us to a natural doctor so that they wouldn't be putting all of those drugs and whatever into our bodies. So I really don't know.

I'm an autism consultant, and there has been no conclusive evidence linking autism and vaccinations......I think it's something like 10 out of the 13 doctors or so who published the original study stating the correlation between autism and vaccinations years back, have actually rescinded their names from the findings and the remaining 3 or so are on trial for presenting false evidence.
It's a scary, scary, thing and we don't know the cause but children who don't get vaccinated for autism are at risk for high fevers. AND there is some evidence between high fevers and autism. It's all so crazy.

i was going to reply with something along the lines of this. IMO jenny mccarthy needs to cool it. sorry but im not convinced that she 'cured' her son of autism... if she DID, dont you think millions of people all over the place would be curing their children??
i havent read any of her books and i dont plan on it. i think all shes doing is giving parents of autistic children false hope that they can cure their autistic child. there is NO known cure for autism and no one knows exactly what the cause is.

well I don't think its necessarily curing, as in finding a cure for it but there are things you can do. Now im not gonna quote jenny bc i have no clue what she is saying.
But Dh's cousin has a son with autism and since he was a little boy she took him to so many specialists, did so many classes that they recommend to help kids with autism. Whether its certain toys, books, classes to help them or whatever it is she took him to all those things and read many books on how to help. this has been helping and like i said he is doing much better. She doesn't say she cured him but did things to help with his progress.
I think its good what she is doing, a lot of parents feel lost and hopeless and i think the more its talked about the more it can help them ya know. The more alternatives there are too also helps.

i have no clue about that, I know she does a lot of fundraising and talks about it a lot but didn't hear that but not saying that she didn't either. Didn't read her book either so no clue what she is claiming.

i think its great that she fundraises and spreads awareness about autism... but it just makes me angry that she claims to have cured her son (if that is in fact what she is claiming.. which i really seem to think i heard that somewhere) its like saying oh i cured cancer

Re: so ladies....Im reading..Jenny McCarthy's book....
i haven't read any of Jenny's books either, but i have seen her interviewed a lot on tv and i think what she generally says is that her son is 'recovering' from autism. i think she equates it to a disease that never goes away but that can have recovery periods. not sure if i'm making sense and not sure if i'm even right on what she claims but i think that's how she's explained it in the interviews. either way, autism is so scary. i don't know how i feel about the vaccination theory but what scares me more is that there are so many doctors out there who aren't even willing to look at an alternative vaccination schedule. from my understanding, most mom's just want to delay them and so may doctors will not even entertain the idea.
ETA: here's a really interesting link to a page on the generation rescue website (jenny's foundation) i think the difference between the vaccines in 1983 and 2008 is really facsinating. click here for link

Re: so ladies....Im reading..Jenny McCarthy's book....
I came across this while searching for a DOC (I guess the search picked up on doc) and just felt the need to put my two cents in. I am a genetic counselor. I work with families whose children have developmental disabilities like autism as well as other medical conditions with genetic origin to help diagnose their specific cause and let them know the chances of it recurring. Vaccinations are an easy scapegoat for autism because the majority of vaccinations are scheduled at the same time that the symptoms of autism start to show. This coincidence is not causative. The polio vaccine was given decades ago to all of our parents and no one saw an increase in autism at that time. For those who claim that the mercury in vaccinations is the reason it should be noted that this particular controversial additive was taken out years ago...before today's children received it..and yet the increase in cases hasn't slowed. I just hate that the media has increased this paranoia over vaccinations. Vaccinations save lives and bring very little money to doctors (my fiance is a resident). Doctors have many high profit/ little effort options but vaccinations are certainly not one. Theres no conspiracy.

yes..you are right..but why is that something happens to children..after vaccines are given..? hmm .. but...its interesting...to hear peopl's stories..and what doctors have to say and people in medical field as urself... im still learning all about it...and reseaching just for my own good...not that i have a child..but im planning to have one..soon..so thats a big deal to me..when it comes to vaccination time..! I ofcourse support vaccines...but not in large doses..there are safer schedules...to follow...that will reduce the risk of a child getting sick!!!!! that i agree with

Re: so ladies....Im reading..Jenny McCarthy's book....
There is such a huge spectrum of autism. As far as Jenny McCarthy 'curing her son' I am going to call BS on that one. While there are wonderful methods of assisting a child's progress and development there is no known cure. There are so many variations and degrees. I work with children, quite a few are Autistic, and no two are a like.

oh yeah the pharmaceutical is all about the profit and the only thing that matters to them, but i wont even get into all this. There is more money in the disease than a cure, in regards to anything.
I am reading this book that is all about this, its real interesting. Its a guy who worked for the pharmaceutical company and talks about so many things. Very interesting stuff.

I understand that people are scared but to have a measle outbreak would DEVESTATE children. I find her stance passionate and understandable, but I also think she is sending the wrong message. Vaccines are ment to protect not harm. I agree they should be spaced out more, but to just not get them, as many are doing because of her, if hurting children more. We are just asking for a polio outbreak
