So we went to see a few open houses today...

So we went to see a few open houses today...

and ****! What garbage out there! Actually, it wasn't as bad as the last time we ventured out. This round the prices were a little more reasonable - a few have been reduced recently as well.

The best was one dump we saw for $400+..... this was the biggest piece of crap I've ever seen. DH and I walk in and could tell right away we didn't like it - plus it reeked of cig smoke but didn't want to be rude. We were shown the first floor, and I started to wonder how ppl could show their house like this? The place was a complete mess, and it seemed that work on the house was stopped in the middle - plaster on the walls, etc. ???? All fixtures in bathrooms and kitchen were original.
Then we go upstairs - beer cans thrown all over the place. Ripped up carpet, garbage EVERYWHERE, stains on the floor, the beds weren't even made and my personal favorite - the guys PORN collection was all over the place!!! Of course DH noticed that right away It actually upset me to see ppl living like that.

Now why on earth would anyone allow their place to be shown like this, and to add insult to injury, list the asking price so high for the area? DH and I agreed when we ran out of there that they'd be lucky to get $300K for the place.

Ugh - at least we saw a few cute homes that were small, but perfect starter homes in the area we'd like....so we'll keep looking!

what area are you looking in??.... My DH and I met with a realtor today for the first time..we are looking in the Huntington township area, not to many houses in our price range. We might need to move out east more.

I can totally sympathize. We have seen garbage, where we feel they should be paying us to even look at their house. The thing is so many people are looking for a house the market is crazy...and disheartening.

Hang in there. I hope you find the house of your dreams. Where are you looking?

Ugh! I know what you mean! I saw a few winners when we were looking. I wouldn't let my friends in if my house looked like that, forget about people who might want to BUY it!

I'm glad you found a few that you liked. Keep looking... You'll find your castle!

Re: So we went to see a few open houses today...

We recently saw on a house hunting expedition a DEAD MOUSE in the tub of one of the houses!! Hello, that's something you might want to check on before letting people walk through your house.
I almost threw up.

Teri ... I totally hear you. But here's the other side ...

My house is adorable. Great condition, very clean. It's a little on the small side, but nothing that's too bad. It's been on the market for 3 weeks now & NOTHING!!! People coming in are complaining about the condition of some houses & we've been looking so I know what they mean, but this is SO FRUSTRATING!!!

good luck to you. I'm hoping it all works out!

Teri, so sorry to hear that. I have a few friends looking and I know when my parents moved back up from FL, they found the same thing. One house, my Dad said you could actually see the floor below him because of a separation of the floor boards and they were asking over $300K!

Don't get down, you WILL find your gem of a house soon!

Lisa, a gun??!!! Not only is that stupid, but quite dangerous too. Some people

and a dead mouse? What in the world are these ppl thinking??!!

We did just laugh about it - when offered to see the basement we both yelled 'no thanks' and bolted out the front door

We have been researching for a while but are in no rush to buy something, so we can still laugh about all of this.

We're looking in Nassau, in a few selected towns: Massapequa (SD#23), Carle Place, and possibly Mineola.

We did see one house we liked a lot - the outside was nothing special but the inside was very spacious and updated. The cons: no garage OR basement. Only a back shed and side porch, but I'd prefer not to use a porch as storage space! Again, this would be ok for now since it's a starter home, but they're asking too much for the house.

What we do find frustrating is constantly deciding what you can and cannot live without. I grew up in a nice town in a cute house and had very high expectations when we started looking - it's hysterical how low my standards have gotten!!!

Christine1221 - where is your house??!!

Teri, that is why I am so apprehensive about venturing out, it is such a let down to see the things they describe, then to go and see it is something else. I intend on building, I am serious. Such dumps indeed.

Teri, I totally feel for you and can relate. But like you said, you are in no rush and can really take your time until you find your house. There were dumps when we looked too, but I didn't experience what you and Lisa Rose did ... the horror!!!!

I will keep my eyes open for you ... I didn't think Mineola and Carle Place were still options for you. I thought Massapequa is more of where you guys were headed.

Good Luck !

Oh the memories of house hunting .
In this area it seams like you have to look at a ton of houses to find the one that you will make your home.

Dont get discouraged. The more you see the more you learn. Take notes, go to open houses, talk to a few realtors. We looked in Mineola for a few months, moved on to Massapequa and Massapequa Park for a few more months and ended up buying in Wantagh. Your house is out there. I have a great realtor in Massapequa. FM me If you are interested.

Teri, we just bought a house in Massapequa Park in SD #23. It was the only house that we saw that was somewhat affordable and not falling apart and convenient to NYC. So definitely explore the Massapequa area.

Re: So we went to see a few open houses today...

ugh! I know what you're going through. We have been looking for over a year. But we're looking in Suffolk. Its disgusting. Some of the more memorable open houses...in one house, the whole family was home, lying on their beds with the house a complete mess- old glasses of OJ sitiing on dressers, crumbs everywhere, dishes in the sink and old food on the counter tops. I remember tripping over shoes that were in the middle of a hallway. hello? if you're having an open house, at least put things where they belong! We went to one this weekend which was a complete scam- the people were so dishonest- they said they had a garage- but they really had a garage door with 3 feet of storage behind it, they had no clue when they wanted to close and a number of other things that weren't quite right...I swear they just wanted to see how much they could sell their home for....
I know that our home is out there somewhere- we just have to find it.
