They are technically on the same Island but for divisional purposes Brooklyn and Queens are considered parts of NYC and not parts of Long Island in that sense. Brooklyn and Queens have the same rules and political powers as Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx... so they are lumped more with that group.

I live in Queens... I wouldn't ever say I live on Long Island (though technically it's the same Island it's not necessarily considered as one). There are divisional lines that seperate them. And if I said I lived on Long Island people would assume I lived across that boarder and actually ON the Long Island side, which I don't. Queens is Queens, Brooklyn is Brooklyn... and no one from those areas ever says they live on Long Island and visa versa. So if you think about it in that sense then yes you are wrong. If you are literally talking about the fact that all 3 share the same island then no. But I think the OP meant if you aren't technially on the LI side where are you from.

I get that that BK and queens are part of NYC but LI isn't any kind of governmental division. LI isn't a town of county is a geographic item. I just never understood why people have to make that distinction......I am not a native NYer so its just something I always wondered......I always just figured that people didnt want to admit they were from LI....

and when I read the OP I thought she meant off LI.....across the bridge. But like I said I grew up a good portion of my life in other states

it's nothing about not wanting to admit you are on the same island. Everyone pretty much knows it's the same island.

Quoted from online:
Since New York City's consolidation in 1898, Queens has been governed by the New York City Charter that provides for a strong mayor-council system. The centralized New York City government is responsible for public education, correctional institutions, libraries, public safety, recreational facilities, sanitation, water supply, and welfare services in Queens.

Queens is just seperate from Long Island in the facts listed above. Long Island is seperated with their own school systems, funding, political leaders, etc. They just don't get lumped together because they aren't run the same or by the same people. Water doesn't even come from the same sources. It's just seperate. That's how it is. Yes it's the same land mass... but there are distinctions. It really has nothing to do with not wanting to say you are on LI; that's more of a mute point to me. If I started saying I lived on LI in Glendale.. people would either think I was stupid or they would just be really confused. It's just the way it's been said (as a seperate unit) for SOOOOO many years.

I think the biggest differentiation is the fact that Queens and Brooklyn is a part of NYC and Nassau and Suffolk isn't.... and thus you state Queens and Brooklyn seperately because it's a part of NYC. The norm is that it's more seperate than together. So people go with that. It's not much of a personal preference I don't think. But even long islander's (meaning Nassau and Suffolk residents) usually don't consider Queens and Bklyn to be the same as Nassau and Suffolk. It's just the way it's always been said.

Personally I don't think Nassau and Suffolk are the same as Queens and Brooklyn... they are more suburb than city like to me. The areas even look different.
My cousins are in Suffolk and they call Queens and Brooklyn the city. When they came to Queens for the first time... they were amazed at how condensed the houses and streets were. It's just different. That's all.

Long Island is referred to as Nassau and Suffolk. Queens is Queens. And Brooklyn is Brooklyn. It's just the way it is.

Actually it's always stated sooo seperate that there are some few people who are literally unaware that it is the same island. this is a true story.. I had a coworker from LI... Islip.... and she was trying to show the class (who were from NJ) where the company originated from..w hich is Mattituck.

So seh drew a map... of Long island on one island. Quees and brooklyn were on their own island, then staten island was it's own island and manhattan it's own island. She was well into her 40s and didn't know that LI, Queens, and Brooklyn were on the same island... because it's always referred to as seperate. It's just how it is.

I couldn't even say that because I was like in the heart of MV when I lived there and not even that close toe Elmhurst. I was closer to Glendale.... so I'd say.. near Glendale... which usually got me no where too... then I go to Ridgewood. which was technically 2 neighborhoods over from me. But no one knows of MV!! Now Atlas mall is putting it on the map./
