Re: Social Sec Offive
I think you do have to take the original with you. I know you have to bring your actual marriage license. Call them before you go.

Re: Social Sec Offive
yes, you need your old card. They take it from you to process your new one.
If you don't have your new card, you might have to apply for a replacement in your maiden name and then process the name change after that.
I found them to be very easy to work with. It surprised me a bit!!

I didn't need my old card, I went to the SS office in Patchogue and only needed my original marriage certificate.

Same here......I went to the one in Lindenhurst.
You can actually download an application online. I will try and find the website. Also, I'm not sure which is worst: the DMV or the SS office....if you know what I mean.

I just showed my drivers license and my marriage license. I did not have my old card and they never asked for it. The one in huntington/meliville was so quick, we were there for ten mins at the most!!

yikes. I was just there a few weeks ago.
I went to SS on my way home from work and it was unfortunately lunch time & took forever
I went to DMV right when they opened and was there for maybe 15 minutes

I went to the one in Patchogue too. They were processing me with my license and marriage license. I asked 'Do you need my old SS card?' as I handed it to them. She took it and shredded it right in front of me.
I had a complete breakdown when I came home. She shredded my identity of the past 30 years so quickly. And I realized it would take a week or two to get my new one. That night I cried for so long in my DH's lap. I didn't know it would affect me so much. But then we found out my hormone counts were very off, so it made sense.

I need an original EVERYTHING - soc sec card and marriage license. I stood in line for an hour and they wouldn't help me when I only had a copy of our marriage license...I had to go back...the whole experience was a nightmare.

Re: Social Sec Offive
I never saw my original SS card in my life. I never asked my mother for it and never needed it for anything. I took my original marriage certificate to SS as well as a drivers license to the office in downtown Brooklyn. If you go around 2:30 or 3:00, it is empty and a pleasure! I had not one issue.
