Social Security

Did everyone change their last name on their socail security.

I just spoke to someone who said NEVER change your name on your social security.

Now I'm confused I was all set to do this on Monday.

Re: Social Security

I don't know why they said that. I kind of blew it off but then thought about it afterwards.

My marriage license says just his last name so can I still just ADD his or do I have to change. I really don't want to hyphenate though b/c I'll be writing my name for an hour

Is there a way to make your LAST name your MIDDLE name?

Re: Social Security

Yes, you can change your middle to your last....Social Security will handle that. I don't think you have to worry about what it says on the marriage license, that is just your proof to get it changed. As long as you are who you say you are, they'll let you change it however you want...

Re: Social Security

Yes there is, my best friend did that. She dropped the middle name she was given at birth and replaced it with her maiden name... So instead of being Elizabeth Ann Smith-Jones she's now Elizabeth Smith Jones.

Re: Social Security

That's exactly what I'm doing... Taking maiden name as middle name. Social Security required me to show other identification showing my name this way before I changed it w/ them.

Re: Social Security

Thanks Mistyeyed

p&a what else did you have to show? Do I have to legally change it first? I would like to change it at SS if possible.

Re: Social Security

SS say they could do whatever I wanted when I went...

I think keeping something in your maiden name is a good idea, until you are fully changed over...however you will always have the marriage license that says you were once your maiden name...

Re: Social Security

I just changed mine this week- was not going to do it this early, but since we are buying a house I have to keep everything in one name (my married name). I brought them my drivers licence and my marriage licence. It was easy, I was in and out in 15 minutes. I changed my last name only.

Re: Social Security

My accountant suggested I not change it with SS & DMV until after the new year so I will wait until then.

I had thought of keeping my maiden name somehow but don't want to hyphenate (too long) and my middle name is my moms name & I like it. Does anyone know if you can change it so that your maiden name is a second middle name? At the same time I LOVE being Mrs. Z.

Re: Social Security

I also used my maiden name as my new middle when I took my DH's last name! I just couldn't give up Kelly! It worked out well.
