Social Security name change question & vent (long)

UPDATED: I was able to get my license, no problem. Thanks to everyone for their help!

HOWEVER, if you are the one who the car is registered to, you have to change your registration too. I don't know if you can wait until your registration needs to be renewed. I am doing it because my registration has to be renewed by the end of May (nothing like waiting until the last minute!). If you want or have to do the same, you need to call your insurance company first and have them change your name on the card, and then have them fax you the new card AS WELL as them mailing it to you. That way you can bring in the faxed copy of your new insurance card to the DMV to get your name changed on the registration.

Re: Social Security name change question & vent (long)

when I went to SS, I had my passport just in case but he only looked at my drivers license and my original marriage certificate. that was all I needed. I haven't gone to DMV yet because I'm waiting for my new SS, but SS does give you this receipt stating that you are waiting for a new card and it has your new name and address on it. Maybe DMV will accept that and your marriage certificate.

I thought all you need is your old SS card and Marriage License...that's what I read on the site.

Re: Social Security name change question & vent (long)

All I showed my was marriage certificate and driver's license with OLD name for SSA.

DMV only looked at the marriage certificate as well (although I had the receipt from the change from SSA). SSA told me the change downloads in their computer overnight, and DMV can see that the next day.

Re: Social Security name change question & vent (long)

I changed my name at SS and DMV the same day. I went to DMV first, with just my marriage license...that's all they needed. Then I went to SS with the same info. I'm not sure if I had my passport, but I don't think I did. Just my driver's license and my marriage license.

Good luck!

Re: Social Security name change question & vent (long)

Breathe Mary!!

The SS I was in & out in about 5 min. They only look at your marriage cert & then give it back. I believe I only showed my liscense. (not everyone has a passport)

Then I went to the DMV & showed them my liscense & my marriage cert. Then they changed my name. SS will give you a receipt w. your new info on it. So that is your proof that your SS name has changed. But, I don't think you need it.

Good Luck!

You don't need your new SS card in oder to get your new license. I did license first and then did the SS card.

Re: Social Security name change question & vent (long)

I went to SS first and just had my original marriage license and my old driver's license. Your marriage license gives your new surname after marriage at the top where your name is - that is your proof of new name after you get married.

I did DMV the same day and all they wanted was my marriage certificate and my old drivers license.
