I know this is sorta a downer but I was curious. DH and I keep saying we want to but never get around to it. He mentioned it recently because he wants to take out a life insurance policy on himself and it really just threw me.
You never really THINK that you're going to need this stuff but he wants to have all the bases covered God forbid something happens to either of us, especially him. He's very big on takign care of his family, namely moi.
After the whole Terry Shivo thing, I decided I wanted to do a living will because I want to be cremated when i die and if I am brain dead, I want the cord pulled. DH knows this and would respect it even if it killed a little part of him to turn off that machine, but I can see my mom totally not believing him and it becoming a major issue.
So I know I have to put my wishes in writing, but myself GO is the hard part because it seems so 'final' then.
Any thoughts?

Re: Spinoff: Have you created a will?
We haven't even thought about this. But I know you mentioned your DH wanting to get a life insurance policy. This was also something that DH and I weren't even thinking about, but my BIL, who is a financial planner, is really pushing us to do so b/c it's so important to have, God forbid something does happen to either one of us.

Re: Spinoff: Have you created a will?
it crossed our minds but will probably get it all sorted when we have a house and so on.. not sure why that makes its a reason!!
for now we are in the process of making sure everything from bank accounts to any property we own is under both names...
as far as life insurnace goes we both have one thru our jobs(basic plans but free) and we'll look into it more when we have kids..
getting older is not fun!!! so many things to think about!

Exactly. I never thought about it but it is something you have to think about because I know my family would want to keep me around any way they could and that would make my DH suffer because he would be trying to do my wishes and getting attacked for it.
so the will needs to be made...sooner rather than later.

Re: Spinoff: Have you created a will?
Not yet, but something in the near future because I own property.
On another note, DH and I will be looking at cemetery plots soon, together with friends of ours who want to do the same thing. We keep joking about how we'll be together forever. Morbid, but practical.
Because my mom was terminally ill, when she turned for the worse I pre-planned her funeral, with my father's ok. I went to the cemetery and picked out a nice plot, took care of all the details at the funeral home. I am happy I did this because I can't imagine doing all this right after she died. It's a cash business too, so no credit cards.

we do not have a will. we don't really own anything big right now...
we did discuss what would happen if one of us were God Forbid brain dead etc. So scary to think about that stuff!

DH and I have life insurance policies and are planning on getting our wills done within the next few months. It is really something everyone needs to do.

Re: Spinoff: Have you created a will?
nah...we haven't done a will yet. We did just get a life insurance policy though...mainly because it's so easy & cheap to get now...my mom tried to get it this year and it's RIDICULOUS how much she went through & how much she's paying. I have friends that are only in their mid 30's too and it just gets more annoying the older u get... we did our research & State Farm has a great program & really hooked us up..puts us at ease a little..
as for the will - i guess we do need to think about it sometime soon...

Re: Spinoff: Have you created a will?
That is something that DH & I really need to take care of. It is such an important thing to have. I really want to make sure that I have a living will, especially after what my sister and I went through with my dad.

Re: Spinoff: Have you created a will?
Not yet. We will though once we have children. in NY, the living spouse of a spouse that dies intestate (no will) would get everything. But we will definitely do it soon.
Also for those who don't have one already, you should do a health care proxy.

Hun, considering you are expecting, it is something you really should do. it is quick and painless and you definitely need to speak with someone you trust God forbid you both pass who could be the guardian for your children. I have a terrible fear of death, but you should do that and a health care proxy. Sorry if I am getting too personal, but I think it is great that you guys are going to discuss this. If you need referrals to attorneys, feel free to FM me!
