What are the benefits from filing married as opposed to separate?
Dh and I filed married but I dont know if we would have made more money separate

We filed married, neither one of us has ever gotten a bigger return. Even if we combined what we each got last year it wouldn't be close to what we got this year.

We filed separate...It would have been better for us to file together but there were circumstances that made filing together very difficult. I still got a much better return than previous years.

we filed married and our tax guy told us it was better to do that cause u get more money back cause we r in the first yr of marriage

we filed together, but i think it was because i already changed my name on my ssc i dont think i had an option cuz i did that..

I'm soooooooooooo upset over what happened with our taxes this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also had him do it seperate just to see what the difference would be.. and it was a matter of maybe $2. So for us, it didn't make a difference if we did separate or joint. We did joint. I HOPE and PRAY next year is NOT like this year!!!!!!!!!

We did married filing jointly, we figured it out both ways and that's how we got more back, plus DH's uncle advised us to do it that way, and he did our taxes. Usually DH owes money every year because he has his witholding set up that way, and I make pennies so I never get too much back, and we did pretty good I think. Turns out they automatically gave us the Making Work Pay credit even though we forgot to file for it, so that actually doubled our return.

We did our married seperate and got a good return! I have always got in 5-6K.. So this year I was lucky as well!

I asked the girl who takes my paperwork at my accountant and she told me that if I changed my name we HAD to file jointly so we did.

For the most part, there are benefits to filing as a married couple. But in certain circumstances, it's better to file separately (rarely this is the case). It's best to check with your CPA about your specific situatino.
