spinoff to tipping
I got my car washed today at place for the first time (I used to always pay my brother to do or my dad would just do it for free). As they were washing it I started freaking out wondering if I should tip the guys. In the end, I figured it was better to tip than not to so I gave them $2 each.Anyway, I was just wondering- who do you tip? For example, DH tips gas station attendants and I never have (my parents never did so I don't but I know people who did). Does anyone else do this?
Off the top of my head some of the people I tip are the ones who do my nails and hair, waiters/waitresses, cab drivers, bellhops who deliver/move your luggage.
Who are some of the people out there you give tips to?

Besides the ones you have listed the others are people who come in to fix things or install things. Also i tip the mailman & garbage men at the holidays. Apparantly i tip my real estate agent. mortgage broker & Real Estate lawyer. hahahahahah

Re: spinoff to tipping
Can I be the jerk who says how much I hate how tipping is out of control?I mean... waittresses and people who inherently make less because tips are expected to make up a large chunk of their pay - SURE.
But.... why are so many people getting tipped to do their job? Especially if its someone who runs their own business?
Like say... a makeup person.
Unless they're going out of their way to you... (and obvs not charging you a travel fee) or do something extra for you -- why are people tipping someone who is self-employed just for doing a good job and showing up on time? Aren't you PAYING THEM to do a good job and show up on time?
etc. etc.
That thread about the real estate agents/etc made me slam my head against the wall. They already get a commission/fee/etc.
DH is a teacher like so many of you -- he doesn't get tipped for going the extra mile for his students which he does on a DAILY BASIS.
I'm bitter and broke. I'll shut up now.

That's what made me start this thread- I was thinking about how many people I need to tip, wondering if I was not tipping the right people, if I'm looked upon as 'rude' because I don't tip the gas station attendant!

lol I understand. I dont get tipped for helping companies save money & deal with their money. While i agree that you are not supossed to tip teh owner of the business. I do tip the workers. Depending upon what is going on. As for
the Mortg thing. That is a personal preference & how out of the way for you they go. Certain things the lawyer & Brokers dont HAVE to deal with. If they do things for you that is unexpected or not there job then it shouldnt hurt you to tip if you so wish. Like i said its a personal choice.
