Re: SS Name Change if you live in queens??
no. you have to go to the jamaica office.
its not that bad... long wait but they have like 15 windows opened at a time. My advice is to go first thing in the morning.
and that's all you need. the original marriage license and your old card.

The reason you have to go to Jamaica is because that is the only card processing facility for the borough of Queens.
Jamaica office opens at 7:00 in the morning. I went on a Friday in the middle of the month, got there at 8:15 and was out by 8:30. Hardest part was getting there ! Went to DMV in Jamaica as well, just a couple of blocks away.

Online it says you can mail in the form with your original marriage license - personally I would not trust that they wouldn't accidentally misplace it, but I guess they do this all the time. I'm dreading going to the Jamaica office too!

im really not all that worried about the marriage license - i assume you can always order another official copy if they didnt send it back. DH has sent his birth cert into social security and has received it back in a timely manner so im not overly concerned. but i think the girls above were saying that you cant mail it in if you live in queens that you HAVE to go in person. is that true??

I think one night they are open late. Honestly, it was really easy. I was dreading it too, but it took less than an hour, and I went at like 4:00. There is a parking lot pretty much right there too. All I needed was my marriage certificate I believe. I did not have my old SS card with me.

What we are saying is that if you live in Queens, you have to go to Jamaica. You cannot go to Manahattan, Nassau County, Omaha Nebraska.
You can mail in the application. I just didn't trust the USPS or the SS with my original marriage certificate. It took 15 minutes of my time at the office, about 40 minutes of travel time and I was done.

I don't think you would have a problem if you didn't have your SS card, maybe bring your license.
They are opened late on Wednesdays I believe...
I was told you cannot mail it in.

if u have proper id with ur moms address than u might be able to swing it.... but u need proof of ur old name, and proof of ur new name & proof of marraige. I brought my old liscense, passport & marraige license. also, try going on a wenesday - they're open from like 8-7..its the only day of the week they're open late. i went at like 1 in the afternoon & the line wasnt bad. u can mail it - but in the mail u have to send ur ORIGINAL birth certificate & ss card...didn't want that going through the mail! good luck! also, u can download the forms & fill everything out before u go...this way when u get there all u have to do is jump on line..
