We only got 1 out of 8 place settings for silver. The price of silver went up quite a bit. How important is it to have silver? We're thinking about whether or not we shoud buy some of ours sets at 10% off our registry and then the rest over time, like one a year, or return the one place setting we got and forget the silver altogether?

Re: Sterling Silver
I know and have known only one person who has sterling flatware and that's my aunt and she's had it FOR EVER!!! lol
I personally would never have it. It's too much work - every time you use it, you have to polish it cause it tarnishes (even with the anti-tarnish strips )
If you have your heart set on it, then go for it, but for the cost, you can get SOOOO many other beautiful items

Me too. DH and I were shocked at how expensive the silver sets were. Our grandparents and DH's mom has silver, but maybe it wasn't so expensive back then. We didn't think we could justify asking people to spend so much on our flatware, though we splurged a little on our china.
I say go with the stainless steel and use the money for other luxury/wish items like Annie said.

Re: Sterling Silver
I was battling with this same question when we first started our registry. I decided against it because I'm very low maintenance and wouldn't want to hand wash and polish the silver. I really like our stainless steel set, it's fancy enough to go with the china, it will only be used on special occasions and still came in the special box:) - i don't miss silver and when you think about the cost...go on a vacation each year instead!!:)))
of course you should do what you want and this is just my opinion...but good luck with whatever decision you make:)

Re: Sterling Silver
There is absolutely nothing in this world that could ever get me to clean or maintain silver flatware. Even if I had a great great grandmother's set, it would stay in a box until I gave it to a future child of mine.

Re: Sterling Silver
When I registered I was told that the price of sterling was going up, so my grandma purchased us the complete set as part of her gift to us before the price went up. Well, I just checked and the set is now almost double what she paid for it so I am happy. Seeing the prices now, I am not sure what I would do. I might wait to see if the price of silver goes down.

Re: Sterling Silver
I took my Mom's advice. she said don't even think about it! she inherited her Mother's sterling Silver flatware (and many other sterling items like tea sets and cups). they need constant polishing and cleaning.

Re: Sterling Silver
I guess I'm in the minority. I LOVE my sterling silver flatware, and even my no-nonsense husband always comments on how nice it is when we use it. (He always says he loves the way it feels in his hands, nice and heavy). The choice to purchase the rest of it is completely up to you. I personally do see it as an 'investment ' of sorts (unlike stainless, in which case stainless is stainless) and since we did not receive all our pieces, we still have to buy a piece here and there (as does my mom for special occasions). I personally would do it, but again, I love it!
Added: BTW, most patterns stick around for a LONG time and most have a lifetime guarantee on them, so if you do chose to buy it over time, you shouldn't have a problem. Plus, another selling point (to me, at least) is that most of the Sterling flatware is made in the USA (Massachusetts, specifically).
