Yeah it doesn't take some things into account... like the fact a hotel room costs $319 a night. Or that the wedding is cash bar. I just went to a wedding that was cash bar and the drinks were about $15 each. I was so mad that I gave $300. They gave me $300 for my wedding but it was open bar and they stayed at there brothers house. My husband and I spent over $100 on drinks. They even charged $5 a glass for soda.

Yeesh, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little concerned about this for the OOT wedding I'm going to on Saturday. I don't know for certain it's cash bar, but I'm heavily expecting it because we scoped out the RH's website and were looking at all the menu packages, and they had a lot of ala carte add ons for different levels of booze, so cash bar I think it is,

FOR SODA!!!!!!!!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!

I would have given less in this case!!! FOR SURE!!!

I'm so NOT a fan of cash bar AT ALL!!! I'll even go out on a limb here and say.... I think it's tacky.

my mother's friend brings a blank check with her when she attends weddings and fills it out accordingly.

The groom is from NY so we never ever expected it. So of course we gave $300 like they gave us. I think I am going to start doing what my grandfather does. Bring a blank check and fill it out at the wedding.

I agree its tacky. The groom's mom was mortified by it. I have been to weddings where wine and beer was free and hard liquor was cash. That doesn't bother me so much.

But for soda. That was ridiculous. Most of us ended up drinking water all night long.

I just wrote that my grandfather does that. We make fun of him but he might be on to something.

He didn't have to do that at my wedding since I got my grandmother's gorgeous, expensive china for 28. But I bet if I didn't get that he would have.

We would never do this for this wedding, but I can see how people might be inclined! In fact, I wish we did that at a NY wedding last year, but we only covered one plate kinda out of spite anyways

We're going to a friend's wedding in October nearby so I figured I'd give it a go and it said to give them $265 -- they gave us a $30 pressure cooker about 6 months after our wedding (after we gave them a kitchen aid mixer as an engagement gift)...

I think I'm gonna have to go out on a limb here and say NO.

IMO, just cause you make X amount of money doesnt mean you can actually afford to give Y amount as a gift...

No, then I would have only given approx. $15.95, yes?

This was actually a family wedding, but don't even get me started on the other one

I think its beyond tacky to have a cash bar. being Russian and Israeli, my family will divorce me if I had done that
I dont understand even how is that an option

I did the calculator and as I said on the 2010 board it came kinda close, but lower, to what I expected

Talk about cash bar...DH's friends brought bottles of liquor with them to that one...
Oh yea, & I was seated at a table w/o my DH....

I know DH & I didnt have the most grand of weddings, and we were budget conscience - but even DH realized the drastic differences between the two. We get a good chuckle out of it...

I forget how much I actually gave them. I'm curious to compare now!

Thats what Im thinking.....we make X but have law schools loans and a house......so that makes the income not really as relevant.

Well, I'm not going to publicly bish about it anymore because unlike some people, I actually have class (and honor my commitments, but I digress...), but I'm just sorry that we didn't know each other then, because then we could have hung out too! Really small world when you think about it. And lol, DH wasn't happy with me at all because I kept going up for more wine, cash or not, and I was like do you blame me??? Do you really blame me????

ETA: at least you can compare! I think my card is still in the mail
