I was running down the subway stairs yesterday evening to get home, and sometimes I see people panhandling, or just sitting there with a cup or something and when I am in a rush, I usually just run past it all.. but yesterday, there was a girl sitting there with a dog.. and i slowed down big time, i noticed that the poor dog did not move.. he just sat there.. he looked weak and a bit malnourished and the girl looked a little tired and disheveled and they both just sat there with a cup..
it bothered me so much, and i feel so bad for that poor dog.. once i saw man with a cat and a dog, and they both were sitting still, i know how hard it is for a cat to sit still.. it just breaks my heart to see such things, poor animals..

Ugh..that BREAKS my heart. I especially hate seeing the animals in the subway when it's gosh awful hot. I feel so bad for them. That breaks my heart more than seeing a human being homeless. The animals have no choice when they are being taken care of by someone like that.
I wonder if the cops can do anything about that?

I am a huge animal lover and it breaks my heart when i see a homeless person with a dog, I just feel like they are so helpless and so innocent. It kills me inside to see that

eta: i usually don't give money out like that.. i did it once on the R train and then a few weeks later, I saw the same guy on the V line and it was a different story.. so i stopped..

Awwh.. knowing my Dh is a huge animal lover and vet tech. He would of bought the dog food..lol. He has done this before. he bought a homeless guy a small bag of dog food and a big bottle of water for the dog. and the man was so greatful, and thanked him. I thought it was the sweetest story i ever heard.

It has to be considered animal abuse. They don't have proper exercise/nutrition/shelter. It has to be some form. But I guess resucing animals from the homeless aren't exactly the top agenda for the police in NYC. I think I once saw an advertisment for homeless animals, I don't know if they rescue them or if you have to bring them in *Shrugs*.
It definitely is not something I would want to see on my way to work everyday. Thing is, most of those animals are probably so far gone, it wouldn't even be worht saving them. Euthenizing them would probably be the only answer.

That was very sweet. I would do that before I gave the homeless man/woman any food.

Wow that is sweet.. if the girl was there, I would have probably gotten something for her and the dog, but honestly I was hoping that she wouldn't be there.. only because I didn't want to see them there and my head go in a million different direction of whether the dog had food or cold..
believe me, i have traveled to enough place to see animals treated as animals.. left out to wander and get chased and stuff.. but they are free to roam and find their own food and shelter.. kind of like how it is the 'wild' - its sad but still atleast they can figure things out for themselves.. but a pet on a leash, that can't do anything.. that's just not right..
maybe that is her pet, and probably she has no other option and she doesn't want to give him up.. i don't know..

I know this sounds harsh but, if you really loved your animal and you know you were not able to feed yourself you shouldn't make your pet suffer as well. Give that animal to a shelter so it can get a home where it can be cared for properly.
I also think that ppl do this so that they can get money because you feel bad for the pet.

I don't think it's harsh, I think it's true and I agree. I think that many people are left homeless and don't want to leave there animals behind or give them away and they just take them with them and hope they will be able to take care of them, and then I think then it just gets too late for them to do anything. :-/

Re: subway panhandling..
How terrible, I've seen homeless people with dogs before.
There is this one guy in a wheelchair that I see right by Penn Station a lot. He always asks, 'Could you please help me get something to eat?' and I always want to give him something like a granola bar, but when I have it he's never around. The other day someone gave him some money and I heard him say, 'Thank Jesus I can eat today.'

This posts sound familiar...did you write about a similar pan handler last year? And how the dogs looked like they were on drugs?

Re: subway panhandling..
I dont feel bad for pan handlers. I think they are all on drugs or have alcohol problems.
If I lost my house and everything I would live with a friend and at least get a job at McDonalds, something anything? I just dont understand how it is so bad that they are on the streets???

I feel like most homeless people start out as alcoholics, drug abusers, or have mental issues. They all need to be on the show Intervention.

i feel real bad for the pet but at the same time, i cant help but feel more sorry for the girl. I love pets, but its sad to see a young girl, well was she young? dont know why im thinking she is but sad to see a young girl homeless and starving.
