Suggestions for Travel...

OK, guys here goes. Hubbie and I were planning on going to Amsterdam & Brussels for a nice trip in March... but due to the current situation in the middle east we are most likely postponing the trip. Any suggestions for more local trips? I wanted to visit a friend in CA but the airfare was outrageous.... and we are not beach people which makes this even harder to plan!!

ETA I am the WORST speller!

How about Florida???

Re: Suggestions for Travel...

californian flights are not too bad...depending on where you go...San Diego averages about $350-400, but LA is only $250...and only 2 hours away...so if you fly into LA (Maybe San Fran as well) you can reduce your airfare...

try some of the online sights...like...

orbitz.com
travelocity.com
expedia.com
site59.com
deltavacations.com

a lot of them tell you the same thing, but there are some fares that are different...its worth it to check them all out.

A friend of mine was just talking about her trip to Arizona. Beautiful scenery, lots of things to see & great weather, especially now!

Try cheaptickets.com for good airfares.

good luck!

Thanks guys... I checked a lot of wesites for the airfare and the prob is my friend lives in san jose and the trips seem to be more $$ when you fly in there. I was considering Arizona, I heard it is great for sinus sufferers!!!

I would say stick with Amsterdam. You'd probably be safer there than in NYC!!!
Just flew back from Mexico yesterday- I wasn't even aware of the heightened terror alert.. the security was VERY tight..

How far is San Jose from San Fran? Can you fly in & then drive down? maybe make a few days seeing the city, then drive to see your friend.

K -
here's travelocity's site with Flights in March ... America West is pretty cheap! Maybe we'll go, too! We'd love to see San fran!

travelocity search for San Francisco

I would also say stick to Amsterdam! Its fabulous, deals are abundant now a days and there is really no reason to be worried about a terrorist act there as they are not nearly as hated as America is.

Amsterdam is awesome - dont miss it!

Re: Suggestions for Travel...

I would still go to Amsterdam, but when we were in Europe in October, the anti-american sentiment was pretty high. So one could only imagine how much worse it would get. I would rather wait until thinks are smoothed over a bit....

ETA I just check flights and they must have gone down drastically! Found tRD for under 300$/per person!

My DH visits Amsterdam often on business - I think any neutral city or country is still ok to visit for now. Most of Europe is really ok, IMO.

Catch: where in Europe did you go where they hated Americans?

I mean, Europeans always have a superiority complex when it comes to us 'stupid Americans' but I dont think there is hatred in the western European countries at least. They arent a fan of President Bush as a whole - but we had no problems in Italy in Oct and I had no problems in Great Britain in April & May.

And when I was in Amsterdam, I couldnt believe just how welcoming and warm the Dutch were.

Re: Suggestions for Travel...

I was told by my friends to cancel my trip, but I think I would be doing myself an injustice. Why let them hold me hostage. I am off to London and Paris on the 28th of Feb. You should still go on your trip. The way I feel is that whatever is going to happen is going to happen. We cannot stop living b/c we think it will. I know you might not find solace in this, but I don't think I will feel any less safe there than I do here in the US.

Wherever you go have fun

Re: Suggestions for Travel...

Catch,
Stick with your original plan! Europeans like to criticize Americans, but they're not barbarians when it comes to politics/behaviour. I don't expect people to treat you badly just b/c of the war, although you may get into a politics discussion, which Europeans don't shun as much as it is shunned in the US.

Something else to add, is that both Belgians and Dutch are fairly peaceful natured and not as 'hot blooded' as South Europeans. But if you encounter a bit of 'cold shoulder' it may actually be related to their normal behavior. I lived in Belgium during a study-abroad program, and found them to be a bit less friedly/less smiling that americans or south europeans. So don't take lack of smiles for hatred.

Re: Suggestions for Travel...

I might still go but am still mulling. I am quite familiar with different cultures abroad, I have been to Holland before, I backpacked in Europe when I was 22 and spent much time all over. We went to Austria and Prague in October and the anti-american sentiment was very high. Bush was on the TV threatening war when we were there and we def felt the cold shoulder.

ETA will discuss with hubbie tonight. maybe will say F* it and get travel insurance just incase something were to happen!
