Surname lookup - for anyone who's bored

Meaning of your last name

I thought this was interesting, to see what your last name means and where it's from, etc.

My maiden name doesn't, but in Italian it means 'you knock' lol

My mom's maiden name pops up. This is the first sentence - This ancient Scottish name has its origins in a Gaelic nickname 'Caimbeul', meaning 'wry (or crooked) mouth', from 'dam', bent or crooked, and 'beul', mouth.

My married name comes up but that wasn't the original spelling of it. Someone in DH's father's line dropped the 'e' off the end of it.

Surname: Martinez
This famous name is a development of the Roman 'Martinus', a personal name derived from 'Mars', the God of war. The spelling here is Spanish, the name in England being normally Martin but also found as the Huguenot Martineau from Poitou, France. Martinez the name is recorded heraldically in Castille, Milan and Sicily. The Coat of Arms for Castille being, 'A green tree an a gold field, within a border of red with knight spurs in Gold'. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Martinez di Castille which was dated 1580, Madrid, Spain during the reign of King Philip II of Spain, 1528 - 1598 Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to 'develop' often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Neither of my names came up. My maiden name means sea villager. I know that from geneology sites.

I'm all about the meaning of names! That's why I think it's gonna be super hard to name my children when the time comes. It can't just sound pretty, it's gotta have a good meaning to it as well.

Thanks for this link, I never even considered the meaning of a lastname, but that's pretty interesting too!
