I have a bridal shower coming up for a girlfriend. I was going to get her something from her registry, but another friend suggested lingerie. I got some for my shower, but quite frankly, I rarely wear any of the sexy stuff. I would rather have gotten something else.

What do you all think?

I'm very hard to fit and definately did not want a lingerie shower. I made sure to let that be known to my 'inner circle' of friends and family.

My bridesmaids suggested in the invitation that guests could look at the registry to get an idea about my tastes and then use their imagination to buy something outside the registry if they wished. I got some very special gifts that were surprises but still to my taste. I can't say there is one gift I got that I don't like.

I vote no to lingerie!

I didn't get any for my shower, but maybe thats because everyone knows me pretty well! I have a few items that I never wear, but I really wouldn't want someone else to pick something like that out for me and present it to me in a room full of people. If i was to get a piece of lingerie for a close friend that I knew would enjoy it, I'd give it to her as a side special present from me and get something else from the registry for her shower.

I got a piece of lingerie for my shower, but that was from my sister, she just bought me a little extra.
I liked it, but I vote for getting her something off the registry.

I got tons of lingerie at my shower that I wouldn't be caught dead in, but all of those things came as 'joke extras' with a gift from my registry.
The only 'lingerie' I got that I actually wore/wear is the white penior set my mom bought me for my wedding night, and a white tee shirt and white boxers that a friend sewed lace on as a joke. She knows that's all I sleep in, so she made me something I would use. : )
So... in answer to your question, I say go with the registry. Even if you choose something small and build a gift around it to make it more personal and creative. For example, you could buy wine glasses from her registry, and then personalize it with wine, an ice bucket, pretty candles and holders, etc.
Good luck, and have fun! : )

Lingerie is tough unless you really know you friend wants & will like it. I received some beautiful lingerie as shower gifts and to tell the truth I haven't worn it all yet. The last shower I attended the bride was cearly embarassed by some of the lingerie gifts she received.

The responses to this are very interesting. I received several pieces of lingerie at my shower - one from my sister-in-law (which I wore on my wedding night) and one from my MOH, which I wore on my honeymoon. Both were little 'extra' gifts they gave in addition to the bridal party gift.

I would still use them, if I could fit in them right now! Ha!

But, unless you know the person's taste, I would stick with a gift from her registry, or like many other women suggested, make something more personal.
Let us know what you decide!

OK - I'm going to stray from the rest of the responses...

First of all, I guess it really depends on your friend's personality/taste.... But i personally LOVE lingerie and was upset that i didnt receive more at my shower! My mom got me a beautiful penoir set that i actually wore twice on my honeymoon, and I got something else from another friend and a g/c to VS from my MOH which I bought something else with. I wanted something different for most nights of the honeymoon, so I found myself having to spend lots of $$ myself on it!

But that's just me... Some of my favorite gifts, however, were NOT off my registry... like a beautiful neclace from Tiffany & a mezzuzah. Those were more personal & were a nice surprise.

Sara - What is a mezzuzah? *NM*

Thanks

I know her very well, we were roommates for 2 years and I've know her for about 10 years now, and she's a good sport, so getting a teddy won't embarass her. Anothe of the girlfriends though since we're her girlfriends we should be the ones to get her sexy stuff.

I think I'll do the wine glass & lingere.

Thanks

Sara - What is a mezzuzah? *NM*

A mezzuzah is a religious scroll that is placed on the doorposts of jewish homes and on he doorposts of the rooms inside the house. They come in decorative holders, and my cousins got me one that is antique silver - it's amazing.

Sorry about not explaining that in the first place!! If you have any Jewish friends, it's a wonderful gift :-)

Oh ok! I have seen one...

outside my friends apartment door. And actually outside most apartment doors in her buiding (north shore towers) I never knew the name but assumed it brought good luck or kept away bad.
Thanks!

Kate - where are North Shore Towers?

We're looking to move out of Manhattan soon? Can you tell me anything about where your friend lives?

Thanks!!

SARA - North Shore Towers?

She actually moved last year into Manhattan! Anyway the towers are in Floral Park, Queens right on the border of Nassau County near LI Jewish Hospital. You can see the three towers from the Grand Central Parkway.

Here is some info I found:
North Shore Towers Management
272-40 Grand Central Pkwy
Floral Park, NY 11005
718-423-3335
718-279-0162 fax

Very nice, they have a pool and a movie theatre, I think golf too. Most are condos but I think they have sublets too.
There is an express bus to the city. If I remember anything else I'll post.
