Tax forms at work after you are married

Did anyone change how they are taxed after they got married? Danielle just started a new job and she filled out her form that she is married but she wants to be taxed like she is single. Did anyone else do this? Will we get more of a return next year if we make this change?

I just got the forms from my company and I want to know if it is worth it to make the change?

Also should I do it for both federal and State?
Thanks,
Scott

I changed mine too. I kept being taxed as if I were single but before I got married I had them take extra $ out just to be safe and I stopped that.

Yes....I changed mine to married but withholding a single rate. Not sure what the outcome will be...we'll find out at tax time next year.

Re: Tax forms at work after you are married

I am pondering this right now. I was told if worse comes to worse the IRS will owe me money. I am still down as single, becaUSe the @#$% book keeper at work will not change it to married until I change it with SS.

Re: Tax forms at work after you are married

I am also married but witholding at the higher single rate. I also take out extra money from my Federal and State taxes just so we are covered all around. We usually end up with a pretty nice refund at the end of the year.

Princess - your bookkeeper at work cannot change your name until you change with SS because you do not exist to the Federal Gov't under your married name until you change it. Your SS number will reflect a different person's name than what they have on file at the moment. When they report their payroll taxes, they won't know who you are. He's saving the company and you a lot of headaches.

I have never heard of this. If you haven't changed your name yet, then leave you last name but you should be able to change your tax form to married if you want.

Re: Tax forms at work after you are married

My job changed my name without a problem. I needed my name changed on my health ins. which was my secondary ins. to match my name on my insurance through my husband which was my primary ins. so they changed everything. I didn't change my name at SS until about 6 months later.
