how did you guys do it that were married after 7.1.06? We are married half the year (or less for some). Is there a law that says how long you have to be married to file jointly?
(Yes, we still have not done our taxes yet)

You don't have to file jointly no matter how long you have been married. You always have the option to file a separate tax return from your spouse.

whether you were married july 1 or dec 31, it still counts as a full year on your tax return.
if you file separately, u will get less of a return.

Yep, just have to be married by 12/31.
And if you file married filing separate, you will probably get less back.

We actually got more back by filing separately. Speak to your tax preparer about it.
