Hey Ladies, hope all is well. I have been a little crazy, not been on LIW much. Bought a house, got a Puppy and boy is that work!!!!
My question is are you guys filing your taxes jointly or separate now that you are married? And if separate why?
Thanks Ladies

Re: TAXES ?? (I know I have been MIA)
I think we're filing separately only because we were only married for about 3 months last year.

We are filing jointly because there are certain exemptions that I qualify for that I wont qualify if we fill seperately.

Our accountant is going to figure out which is better for us financially for 2007, jointly or separately. For 2008 year onward, we will file jointly.

you could have been married for for 1 day last year--and you can still claim Married Filing Jointly for the entire year.
for us we're doing MFJ -- just easier that way.

you cannot file completly seperatly, its conisdered Married filing single. it usually helps only when one of you have a high amount of deductions ie: medical bills etc. Otherwise you don't benfit to much when filing married single
but your accountant can look at both ways and be able to tell you which will be better for you.

Ok, taxes always confuse me; should we just file jointly then? We were sent our individual forms and we usually do our own taxes without an accountant.

We're going to do it both ways and see which one is better. People tell me that sometimes there is no real difference and sometimes there is a HUGE difference!
My accountant will tell us which works best for us and we will choose whichever one gets us back the most or requires that we pay the least.

this is the best route--cause really each person's taxes are different. sometimes married filing joint can work for people while married filing separate might have better tax breaks individually.
the best is to have your tax preparer look at the taxes and decide which is the better option for you.

Same here, which ever we get more back from that is how we will file

We are filing jointly because I was playing with the software to see the difference and Heather is right it works way more doing it jointly becasue we were in the red and owing doing it married but separate. We also own a home, pay taxes and own a hybrid car so it will be easier to do it jointly. We get alot more back than we expected.

That's what I'm thinking we'll do too.

My accountant said legally you are supposed to file as a married couple. Even Matt and I have to file as married in 2007 and we were married only married for 3 days in 07

Filing with status as 'married filing seperately' is still filing as married. You have to put each other's ss# on both returns. You can not file as 'single' if you are married.
