Teachers: Games to increase elementary school vocabulary??/

I am looking for some fun ways for kids to learn new vocabulary words. The class I am working with can not even retell a story without you being totally lost!!!



They need such help with dialouge and vocabulary!!!

I used to have my students work in their cooperative groups in game like Balderdash. Once they got their vocab word they'd have to look up the proper Def. From there they'd have to make up 3 definitions to go with the word. Then the rest of the class had to guess the correct def. The kids loved it!! Sorry if my explanation isn't too good- I'm SHOT!!!

They also loved making illustrated dictionaries

Are you sure it's their vocabulary that is causing the probleming of retelling? Maybe it's comprehension??

try this link - it has board games you can print out

word game boards

i liek to play my won games with them. I have 7th garde and one game they love is password - like that old game show.

Each team gets like a captain - the captain gets the 'password' or vocab word. Theyc an only give a one word clue to thair team - it helps them study for tests too.

My class likes to play actual board games like last word
you have to say as many words thst go with the topic before a buzzer rings

Or it could be that they don't have the skills right now to logically sequence and organize their information....

Great point! Are they understanding the story?

I teach my students roots, prefixes and suffixes so that they can better understand the structure of the vocabulary words that they've been instructed to memorize.

It seems to work.
Also, I work with the parents to make sure that the kids memorize the words.

During the lessons, we make up flash cards, color the cords (or decorate with stickers) while repeating each word, and then have a vocabulary contest among the kids.
