Teachers- how did u change your cert

How did you change your last name on all your certifications? I have 5, should I call NYS Ed Dept?

I was wondering the same thing....and what about my diplomas? If I ever have an office to hang them in, they'll all be the wrong name!

I didn't change mine. I just started working in a new district and they were ok with it b/c I showed them my driver's license and SS card..but I guess I should do it eventually

I didnt do mine yet but my Principal said you absolutely have to ...technically you are not certified if its in your old name

I hope to get it done soon though

If certifications are tied in by social security numbers, I dont see how anyone would have to replace them if you change your name. SS#s dont change. When I had gone for an interview after I got married, I told them my certs were in my maiden name and they said it didn't matter.

I didn't change mine. I don't plan on changing it either. I asked around and they said it's not a must.

Do you know where to get the application for permanent certification?

Yeah thats what I thought. Think about how many thousands of married female teachers there are in the state of New York. I highly doubt that all of them changed their certs.

If you go on the NYSED.gov website they have a link to information....

As for the name change, I went to a seminar on Permanent Cert and this came up. And the guy from Albany said that it's not worth the money to change the name until you are applying for Permanent Cert. They are linked to your SS# so districts can still find your cert's.

I didn't plan on doing this unless my school requested it.

Yup! I was permanent for over 8 years BEFORE I was married and I have no intention of changing either one at the current moment. My sister was permanent for the same amount of time and 17 years after her wedding, she still has her maiden name on her certs. The state has not questioned her or the principal of my school. We are a private agency that gets audited for various reasons and they do check the certification of our staff or we risk losing funds. If it was a problem, we would both know about it.
