Teachers: Open School Night

Teachers: Open School Night

I hate these kinds of things. Anyone else get nervous?

I meet with the parents on Tuesday for only an hour and some parents for less than that.

Does anyone ever serve refreshments?

If so, what do you get??

Thanks

My first year I did coffee from Dunkin Donuts and coffee cake, pastries, etc. Besides the coffee, no one ate anything and I quickly realized no one else did anything either, so it's not necessary. parents want in and out quickly and many are running to see other teachers as well.

I teach HS but it is cute to have parents read or view student work. I have my journalism students, who are learning about headlines, write a catchy headline for open house night. The parents love it.

I am always a little nervous even after years of teaching I always think about serving cookies as a nice gesture, but like one poster said, parents are often running to see many teachers so they need to be in and out as quickly as possible. I teach in a middle school and have many parents, so I also need to get them in and out as fast as possible. Cookies might encourage them to stay longer than necessary lol...One thing I always make sure I have with me is a bottle of water

We have our curriculum conference tomorrow morning and I'm not serving anything. It's only a half hour long and I also do not want to bring in food because I have many students with food allergies so I do not want anything to be left over in the classroom.

I thought about doing that once and glad I didnt because every 'back to school night' i only see about 5 -10parents (i teach 110!)
Plus, like someone else said, they have to go to alot of other teachers, so there really is no time.
If you do want to offer something, why not set out a plate of cookies or a bowl of candy, just as a little something
