Teachers or those whose job requires a lot of talking: How many times a year do you lose your voice?
It is only September and already I am losing my voice.
I lost my voice four times last year each lasting several days.
What can we do to prevent this?

I once lost it several times in one year and had to go to speech therapy...she made sure I was not breathing shallowly (breathe from your diapragm), make sure I wasn't talking from the back of my throat, and told me to drink a lot of water. Now I lose my voice about once a year and it's always a bacterial infection, so I take antibiotics. I also try not to yell

I lose it all the time - in fact I have nodes. I have had lots of speech therapy and it hasn't really helped. I used to use a mic in the classroom, but I hate it. It's the WORST. Everybody can handle different levels of vocal abuse.

Sorry to crash...Im a music teacher and a had vocal chord nodules when I was in high school/college...So by the end of each week my first eyar teaching I would have NO voice at all. I ended up getting a microphone system to help me project my voice without straining it. I also saw a speech therapist as well. Drink lots of water!!

I lose my voice a lot. Especially with a few of my classes they get noisy so I end up raising my voice. When it starts to happen I just won't talk loud anymore and drink a lot of water and have hard candy & it goes away pretty fast. Very annoying though.

I've actually never lost my voice teaching. I'm in my fourth year teaching....in fact, none of the other 17 people in my department have lost their voices in the past four years.

Re: Teachers or those whose job requires a lot of talking: How many times a year do you lose your voice?
I'm in my third year now....my first two years, woah, I'd lose my voice by the end of the week. Okay maybe not totally lose it, but I'd feel a serious strain and I'd wake up Saturday sounding like a man. Some weeks, it would be so bad that the weekend wasn't enough rest, and I'd lose it again by Tuesday.
It doesn't help that I'm a music teacher too...I sing alot (though I sing healthier than I speak!) and since there's so much NOISE in my classroom (mainly instruments), I tend to talk/shout over it. I used a microphone but it drove me nuts after awhile...and to be honest, it didn't fix my bad habits.
This year...I am soooo proud of myself. I haven't lost it ONCE!! It gets a little tired, but I totally make it through the week. I drink LOTS of water, non-stop. I also take ricolas too. I also try not to speak louder than I need to. I'm naturally a loud talker, and I use my throat way too much. And I've gotten MUCH better at NOT speaking when they're speaking - I try not to shout over them to get their attention. I wait til they're silent (I use tons of quiet signals) before I say a word. I also try to find ways to use less words when I want to explain something. I just discovered the other day - I would go through all these physical stretches with them for chorus warmups...and I stopped explaining what they were gonna do. I told them to just do what I do, and not only was my voice silent- but THEY were silent. It was cool! It's amazing what kids can do without having verbal instructions.
The trick is to think of speaking at a higher pitch than you normally do. I still have a hard time with this.
You're still pretty early in your career, right? That has alot to do with it- your voice just isn't used to all this abuse.
REST your voice like CRAZY when you're not in the classroom. I make it a point not to talk on the phone if I don't have to.
Good luck! Hope this won't last much longer for you!

every year - the first month of school and then that's it. this year was the worst because the first 2 weeks i had over 40 kids in my class - and a verey loud fan. I think it also has to do with my allergies - they are the worst at this time of year!

Re: Teachers or those whose job requires a lot of talking: How many times a year do you lose your voice?
i agree with what Tara said.
I am a teacher and i have never lost my voice. i talk all day and i also sing a lot as well. the key to not losing your voice is by not speaking from your throat. it's hard to do and i think i am only good at it because of all my years of voice lessons!
try to breathe from your diaphgram...that should be pushing the air out not your throat. that will help a lot. Also, try to speak on a higher pitch when possible. also, try humming when you can to get the air going. whispering and shouting are the worst things you can do. also, drink lots of water too!
GOOD LUCK!

i don't really loose my voice either. We got these mic systems for our classroom; not sure what they are called though. I know they have helped a lot of teachers in the school b/c they can talk at a regular tone
