Teachers Please Help!

What did you do to get a job on LI? I have been applying for over a year. I have 5 years experience, my Master's and a pretty nice resume. I have gotten ONE call for an interview and that was in Queens! What can I do???

sub, sub, sub.... I spent quite a few years in my district student teaching & subbing.. my experience landed me a leave replacement & then voila- my own classroom.

It is soooo hard. Keep trudging along! GL!!

Thanks! I honestly don't think we can afford for me to sub. It really stinks because I have been teaching for 5 years and been a staff developer every summer for 6 summers. I am really upset that now I have to work my way up again, be retenured and start all over again.

Well, not young, but 30, so not that old! At this point I'm thinking about having enough days and tenure for maternity leave in about 2 years. If I sub, I don't believe I'll have that.

I've been looking in District 25 and 26 in Queens. Close to the LI border. I would love to stay in the NYC system because I'll keep everything and just carry on at a new school. But, it's still over an hour commute from our house. Right now I leave at 5:30 and it takes me over 2 hours, which is hell in the car.

I just don't know anymore! I have been begging for interviews an on one wants to give me one. I feel like a failure.

i hear you. i am one of the fortunate ones and got out to LI after only one year in the city. i know it sounds cracy, but i thank God everyday for my job and tenure.

It is an INSANELY tough market out there. i can think of about 10 colleges in LI and NYC that are pushing out teachers like crazy. there is just not the market for all of them!

Honestly, one of the best ways to get a job on LI is to:
1. know someone ....sounds terrible, but it's true. i can't tell you how many interviews i got because i knew someone that worked in the district. i was even offered one. many schools as their teachers to refer people, they like knowing the person can come recommended. i know this is not always the case and people do get jobs but just randomly applying, but it's hard.

2. connect with a district through leave reaplcements, subbing, teaching assistant, etc. be careful with this though, just because you do that for a district doesn't mean they will hire for a position. my district for some reason is notorious for NOT hiring their subs... i don't know why, but that's how it is.

3. hold dual certification. i have an elem. ed. license and a special ed. license. NOT ONE interview was for a general ed. classroom.... they were ALL for special ed. if you can make yourself marketable that way, do it.

4. Sell yourself.... in your cover letter and/or resume, don't just put teaching stuff. at the interview for the school i am now, i got more questions about my travels abroad, working in another field, living on other parts of the country, etc. than about teaching. EVERYONE and their mother will give the same generic response to how do you teach reading, etc. etc. what makes YOU different? What can YOU give to them that no one else can? Everyone and their mother has a Masters from Hofstra or Post.... what else have you done that they will find interesting and unique?

GOOD LUCK!!! i know it's tough..... hang in there!!!!!!
