Today's Question Finances 10/1/2002

How do you handle the finances in your household?

My hubby and I have a joint savings and a joint investment account, he handles the rent, the telephone bill and any credit cards he came in the relationship with and his cell phone bill.

I take care of cable, gas, light and groceries. I also pay my own student loan, and my own cell phone bill.

We contribute a percentage to our joint savings for trips, emergencies etc.

This works wonderfully for us.

What are you ladies doing???

WE have a joint account and it is a linked Checking and Savings so my check goes into SAvings and His into checking and if we need money we take it out of savings...
We also pay cash for alot of things and we budget $300 a week between the two of us.
We also have one joint Visa card that gives us Marshall's gift certificates

We both have joint savings and checking. We contribute our checks into the checking, and I pay the bills with it.
We have separate credit cards.

We have joint checking, savings, and brokerage accounts. We deposit both our earnings into the checking, put 10% into savings and 10% into the stocks and mutual funds and then pay all our bills. We have shared credit cards and individual ones.

We both have our own savings and checking accounts...and then one shared checking acct. into this acct, we both contribute the same % of our paychecks and we pay all our utilites and car stuff from that. Any personal expenses are paid from our own cking accts.
we also have separate credit cards...and a shared card that we make sure to ask each other when we use it.

WE both also have our own insurance, and investiments...although it is with the same financial advisor.

WE have a 'temporary' will- which we put together b4 we went to Thailand. Once the baby comes, we will have a formal one drawn up.

We are just starting to figure all this out. Our wedding is 11/2. Although we have a joint savings for the wedding, we also have each others names on our checking accounts. Scott pays all the bills using both accounts. I hate doing it so I am glad to give it up. But now it is getting hard to maintain so many accounts so we have to decide on one checking and a savings.
We each have our own IRA/401 K accounts though.

We have a joint savings & checking account and I have a seperate checking account. I pay all the bills and all the extras. My hubby's check goes straight into savings but he has an ATM card for his spending money and anything extra that he needs. We're saving for a house so we're really trying to live on my salary because he moved into the apt. I had before we got married. After a year we've saved a lot and we're STILL looking for a house (since March)

We've had a joint checking/savings since before we were engaged. We share everything, there's no yours and mine, it just makes things easier, and we don't fight about it. I do all the bill paying, cause I have to be in control.

We put all our eggs into one bucket basically (ok, basket )... I've been unemployed for a year now, but if I was working, it would still be going into OUR savings or checking. He does all the finances, paying of bills, balancing the accounts, I hate that stuff ! Our credit cards are shared, everything is OURS. I basically carry around the plastic and he pays for the damage i do !
(Joking aside, I'm a good shopper. Im the bargain hunter for everything from groceries to shower curtains !)

When we got engaged, Pat volunteered to be the bill payer because, in the simplest terms, I suck at it. He pointed out that that would be easiest if we combined finances, and I reluctantly agreed. Our accounts are all joint now, and he pays all the bills, which I create. I keep my own credit cards (which he pays with our $), my own health insurance, and use my maiden name in some cases, his name in others, and a combo of our names sometimes too. I also retain ownership of one of our cars, as does he, and the third we own jointly. Our mortgage is also in both of our names.
We are SO very happily married, but I can't help wanting to maintain just the tiniest bit of independence. If I ever have the luxury of becoming a stay at home mom, I am comforted that I have a college education and permanent NY State teaching certification to fall back on, GOD FORBID anything were to happen that would cause me to take on 100% responsibility for me and my finances. Does anyone else feel that way?? That although you love being a 'family' with your husband, you still need a bit of independence?

JennRenee..... I TOTALLY agree with you about some things I like to have as my own. We have our own credit cards, but both pay towards, so that doesnt really count. The same thing about becoming a parent. I also have a NY state Permanent Certificate, and hope to some day have that if anything should ever happen. But there are things I like to have as my own. That is just the way I am. In some ways Im very dependent, and others Im independent.

I got so used to putting money on the checking account because closer to the wedding it was easier to pay wedding bills that way and now over a year later I have yet to set up a joint savings account!
We have a joint investment account that we practically ignore now as well. That was mainly for the house and only has emergency money in it.

In any case, we pool all our money and I take care of the bills. So I can see that we are savings a portion every month that is leftover after paying the bills but I really need to get serious and completely separate it into a savings account so I'm not tempted to write the odd check here and there on junk.
