some recipes actually say 8-10 hours. But not everybody does that. WHen dh makes sauce he cooks it for about an hour. When he did it this past friday he cooked it for a bit longer about 1 1/2-2 hours

Re: Tomato Sauce
When I make it from scratch, I usually let it cook for an hour/hour and a half

1 1/2 hours tops. Then i let it simmer till dinner. I would say 8-10 hours if your making 50 gallons

What do you girls add to it?
I did carrots the last time instead of the sugar, but DH didn't like it. He's not a vegetable eater, so he wasn't very happy to have it in the sauce.

dh also uses carrots instead of sugar, i like it better this way than when he did do it with sugar one time. Did heknow ahead of time you put carrots bc then it was just in his head. When i taste it with the carrots in it, i cant actually taste the carrots

Nah he just a pain and saw them and said it before he even tried it. I think I may have added too many carrots the last time cause I was on the phone and got carried away. Im going to give my sauce making skills another try this weekend. This past weekend we had his moms sauce cause she made like 50 gallons of it, and it was good, but too watery for my taste, so I want to make my own to have. Whether or not he's going to like, its that another story!

Re: Tomato Sauce
I put in a small chopped vidalia onion and about 6 oz of merlot to sweeten it. My Dh loves it. The poor thing has gained 50 pounds since he met me.

yeah see thats exactly it, it was in his head and he wasnt going to like it even before he tried it. Lie to him that you put sugar in it but put carrots and watch that he wont even know lol
do you put any meat in your sauce for flavor. Dh cooks the sauce with pork and sausage, the pork also helps with the sweetness

Re: Tomato Sauce
DH got a old recipe for meatballs with raisins in them to sweeten the sauce, we tried it out and it does work as long as you cook the meatballs in the sauce for more then 3 hours but i wasn't a fan of it. Carrots or sugar. We make meat sauce (pieces of steak, pork chop, meatballs and sausages) typically for company and special occasions. Normal sauce just is tomato chopped, crushed and puree with onion, garlic, carrot and a hint of red/green peppers and good red wine. Veggie sauce I do the same above but with more peppers, bite size string beans (not a ton just a bit), and the last 15-20 mins I add diced squash and peas.

Yea I think I may shred the carrots this time around to hid them better. Maybe he won't notice them. He's a royal PIA when comes to eating...
Im going to add meat this time around. I'm not too sure when to add it in, but Im guessing about half way through cooking the sauce?

Re: Tomato Sauce
when adding meat i suggest to season it and cook it in a fry pan untill browned DRAIN THE FAT... then when you start your sauce put the meat in.
