Topic of the Day for 11/12/02

By popular request...

What is the best movie you've ever seen that almost no one has heard of? Translation: What movie do you think other women on this board would enjoy, but may not know exists...

Mine: Antonia's Line -- FABULOUS MOVIE!

Edited to add a description -- I figure this a great way to find out about excellent movies we've never heard of, but its hard to know if you'd want to see it without knowing what its about eh? heheh

From Netflix: 'The remarkable story of a woman who builds a new life with her daughter in a quiet Dutch village after World War II. Winner of the 1995 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. '

That's a hard one!

My fav movies are the corny ones that we all know about like Dirty Dancing and Flashdance!

I'll have to think about this one.

Thanks Valenia for starting this again!

Hmmm..tough one. I love to watch Lifetime movies and no one ever sees those - but I wouldn't call those 'good movies'.

Two of my favorite movies that are less than popular but not unheard of is 'Defending Your Life' and 'Quick Change'.

People have most likely heard of this one, but to my knowledge, it never was very popular...

Being John Malkovich ~ LOVED IT!

sonicstef -- I absolutely LOVED Defending Your Life, what a great suggestion. For those of you who didn't see it, heres the summary for anyone looking for a funny/sentimental rental:

'After Daniel Miller (Albert Brooks) crashes his BMW convertible into a bus, he's transported to 'Judgment City,' where he meets the love of his life, Julia (Meryl Streep). Unfortunately, Daniel needs to defend his life on Earth before he can ascend to heaven with Julia. He frantically attempts to explain the positive things he's accomplished, but soon realizes that Julia may be too good for him. '

The Sweet Hereafter
Suicide Kings

On the flipside - the most vile movie I have ever seen that's not too mainstream is The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover

Anyone know this one?

For comedy -- Dogma -- especially if you went to Catholic school. It's a spoof on catholicism that stars Matt Damon & Ben Affleck. It's my all-time favorite!

A great thriller is 'Dead Calm' -- which was the first movie Nicole Kidman did that got attention in the U.S.

If you ever did the 80s 'club scene' in Manhattan, than 'Party Girl' is a great pick.

And if you like classic movies, 'The Thin Man' movies (there a few of them in the series) are great. They're comedy / whodunit movies.
