Traveling during Thanksgiving - do you travel far?

Traveling during Thanksgiving - do you travel far?

Ok so we decided we are going to visit my sister in NC for Thanksgiving. We are debating driving vs. flying.

How is the traffic during the holidays going down south wed night and coming back up sunday. I am sure it is ugly. (I used to drive from MD to NY for thanksgiving while in college and I remember it being brutal!)

Anyway we can probably get 1 flight free and the other one will be $$$ but am willing to just pay the price rather then sit in traffic. THOUGHTS?

On a side note my parents, other sister and her bf are driving together and leaving LI wednesday at 1.

honestly--i would rather pay the money!!

one year my parents went to VA for thanksgiving at my sister's house. I am not kidding you when I tell you it took them TWELVE HOURS to get home because traffic was so unreal. my dad vowed he would NEVER do it again.

we drove to NC for thanksgiving one year and it really wasn't bad. You just have to leave at the right time so you don't hit DC rush hour traffic. That will put a real damper on your car trip.

i am not sure where you would be looking to fly out of, but try airtran

i just got my MIL tickets from Philly to Atlanta GA, for $169.00 round trip ( and that included all those silly little fees)

Ugh I believe it. I remember my 5 hour ride to college took me 8 hrs. (Unless I timed it just right and left at like 5am or really late at night)

that stinks, my MIl was direct flight but we booked like a month ago. Well it was worth a shot

Hopefully you'll find soemthing fairly inexpensive, so you dont have to drive.

I drive to VA each year for Thanksgiving and instead of fighting the traffic Wed. pm I just leave early on Thurs. I normally make it there by 12pm way before dinner and it's so much easier to travel in the tri-state area early in the morning! I've considered flying but flights are so expensive I am going to suck it up and drive.

Same here... no WAY do I want to sit in a car for hours on end. I don't even like driving back and forth from LI to Queens .

I don't remember b/c it was awhile ago when we went for thanksgiving. I think we left at 5 a.m which gets you to DC around 10 which is after their rush hour time

I've driven to Virgina several times, leaving at midnight and arriving at around 7 am. If you left around 10 pm on Wednesday you should be good and not hit any traffic and probably arrive to NC around 10 (depending on which part) I would be concerned about the trip back though.

I would also rather sit in traffic then deal with the airport during the holidays.

This year we are flying to San Diego, so driving was not an option. I think my threshold is 6-7 hours. I dont mind driving that if I leave really early, before traffic. Though, we are visiting my Dad in San Diego for his second marriage and Thanksgiving, and flying is the only way to go!

going there may not be too terrible, but coming home on Sunday may be hel!lish... I remember back in college always driving back to school that Sunday after Thanksgiving and a normal 3 hr drive would take me like 6 hrs.
