Two Part Puppy Question!

Two Part Puppy Question!

I feel bad I haven't been on here more often recently... but LIW is blocked at work now. And the puppy has been keeping me busy all the time I'm not at work!

Two questions...
1. How many times a day should a puppy poop?
2. What kind of dog food do you feed your dog and what are some of the best?

Duncan is almost 5 months old - we feed him twice a day and he's been pooping like 4-6 times a day! The vet gave him some antibiotics to make sure it's not a bug, but I think it might be his food. The breeder we got him from fed him Nutro for Large Puppies so that's what we've been giving him, but I'm thinking maybe something else would be better. (And of course we just bought the giant bag of Nutro. )

TIA!

Here is his sad puppy dog face hahah

Re: Two Part Puppy Question!

First what an adorable puppy!!!!!

When we first got our dog, we noticed the same thing and consulted the vet, he recommended Science Diet for Sensitive Stomachs. Its kind of expensive but he said to just keep him on it as a puppy and then we could switch to something cheaper. And when you have a big dog, the food goes quick. I buy (2) 50lb bags a month! Anyway, that food really helped and then our puppy was more regular. Now we feed him Beneful and he is also fine. Our vet said the most important thing to look for in a food is to make sure its not artifical meats & veggies....so when looking at the ingredients make sure it says 'chicken, beef, pork, potoates, rice, etc' . Also make sure it doesn't say 'fillers'. Its best to get all natural. HTH!

My puppy poops 3-4 times a day. We feed him science diet. The vet had recommended Buffalo Blue which is a great food but it is also very expensive.

He might have giardia. Its a bacteria and very common in pups. I would run through the antibiotics and see if it changes at all....also make sure you wipe his butt with a baby wipe cause if it is a bacteria and he licks himself he is just recycling the bacteria.

Jeter pooped a lot as a puppy too. He also eats Nutro for Large Breeds. Now he's two and he poops 2-3 times a day.

I think it's pretty normal for a puppy to poop a lot. Both of ours did when they were younger. Now they are 3 and 4 and it's a regular twice a day. We feed them Beneful.

ETA: So adorable!

Re: Two Part Puppy Question!

Candy started out pooping a lot and it wasn't nice, it was giardia. But even after she was cured she pooped to often and it was smelly.

The breeder had recommended Merrick or if we didn't want to do that then Eukanuba. Well after a while of her poop smelling foul, I pulled her off Eukanuba and decided to try more expensive Merrick. WORTH IT!!

Merrick just looks and smells healthier. You can see the chicken chunks. It looks better then the food I eat and doesn't have a dog food odor. Unlike the other dog foods the first 5-7 ingredients of Merrick are natural ingredients (chicken, duck, sweet potatoes, apples, etc.) They buy meats and produce grown in the US only, nothing from China and make it all in their factory in the United States. And they have more then 20 flavors so once he is an adult he will never get bored.

I feed Candy puppy plate and she loves it. Of course you will need to go through a lot more a day then I do, but I think its worth trying it.

Only thing is you cannot buy it at Petco, Walmart or Pet Smart. Merrick will not sell to the large National chains. They support the smaller stores. You can order it online or they have a store locator on their website.

I have a Golden too and he will be 5 this year. I feed him Nutro Adult for Large Breed dogs but when he was a puppy I fed him the Nutro Puppy for Large Breed dogs. Nutro is an EXCELLENT dog food and I'm not just saying that because I use it but because it was reccommended by lots of vets and breeders.

At 5 yrs old my dog poops 2 times a day but when he was a puppy it was def 3-4 times. Just keep checking in with your doctor and he will be fine.

when i got him i was feeding him eukanuba since thats what the breeder was feeding him. but then i switched him to pedigree for small breeds.

he goes usually once in the morning after breakfast and once after dinner....sometimes he'll go an additional time so 2-3

Re: Two Part Puppy Question!

Wheat and corn are difficult for dogs to digest but b/c they are inexpensive many of the major dog food brands use them as the primary ingredents in dog food. Difficultly digesting these foods can lead to increased need for the dog to poop- It can also lead to gas and malabsorption. We had a similar problem with our dog. The vet should test a stool sample b/c not all causes of GI problems can be treated with antibiotics.
We ended up changing our dog to Solid Gold which is a holistic dog food- It is a bit more expensive but his GI problems have resolved and he is VERY regular. We also do not give him any products that contain wheat or corn- Another thing to keep in mind is the 'meat source' some dogs cannot tolerate some meats.
If you do decide to change your dog's food do it slowly-Add a little of the new food to the food he is currently eatting and slowly change the porportions until you have weened him off the old food and on to the new food.

Re: Two Part Puppy Question!

Rex used to poop alot now its 2-3 times a day and he's almost 5 1/2 months old. He's on special food from the vet cause he has food allergies! It almost killed him

IT's science diet z/d I'm sure its not the healthiest out there for him so we are trying to get him off of it very slowly

basically one kibble at a time

Your puppies sooooo cute
