We have a lot of clutter. The closet space ***** too so we really dont have places to put anything.

Re: two people's stuff...one br apartment
DH and i lived together for a year before we got married but we just moved to a new place and this is still an issue for us. we have daily conversations that go something like:
me: 'why do you need that?' him: 'because i want it' me: 'but WHY?' him: 'because i use it' me: 'since when?' him: 'always' me: 'i've never seen you use that. throw it out' him: 'no'
just yesterday he was trying to convince me he needed a watch just because it's 25 years old. it was like the first watch he ever bought. it was terrible looking, broken and not even worth anything.
all i can say is, we just try to compromise a lot. the stuff that he insists on keeping for no reason i just try to find a place to tuck it away. we have become very creative when it comes to storage! good luck!

we have the same issue. our solution? get a storage unit! dh has sooooooo many tools/tool boxes/saws there was no way we could fit that crap in the apt! plus i had a lot of miscellaneous school junk i just can't (wont?) part with!
this came to a head after my shower....sooooo much new stuff....had to chuck any old stuff we didnt think we'd use anymore.

You just learn to deal. DH and I have lived in the same 1 bedroom apt for almost 5 years now and are moving to another one in the fall. It's full of clutter and there's nowhere near enough closets but we just deal.

i agree you learn to live with clutter... but if you can, one thing we did was leave our big gifts (like china, flatware, and everything I got from my grandparents) that we won't use until we have a house at our parents' houses. that helped a lot - no way could i deal with all that stuff here.
we have a 2 br but the 2nd br is tiny and no closet, so not much help. we also redid the closets in our bedroom - had the container store design it and installed it ourselves. It helped a little.
I have just learned to live in a messy apartment. if my mother ever came over and saw it this way she'd ground me if she could!

What we did was look for a 2 bedroom since we knew we had too much stuff and turned the second bedroom into a walk in closet

Re: two people's stuff...one br apartment
Alot had to be placed in storage. I am happy to say I only had one bin and a small box the rest is DH's. He is a pack rat. This was a big challenge especially since we moved 3 times (long story). At one point we even had a garage that was filled with his junk. We had about 25 boxes that I made him go through before we moved back to the East Coast. I was firm with that and we ended up downsizing to about 10 boxes. In my case the more space we had the more dh was determined to fill it up.
Now we dontate items every so often and I give things away to family. He still has a problem surrending certain things

Re: two people's stuff...one br apartment
We've been going through stuff for over a year. We've donated stuff, put stuff in storage, tossed stuff and bought some inexpensive ikea cabinets.
The latest is that we're expecting a baby in January. Now, DH is finally on board to put the apartment up for sale and get a bigger place. We could live with an infant in the apartment, but would be in major trouble with a toddler.
However, the bambino plan is not for everyone!

Re: two people's stuff...one br apartment
underbed storage helps a little. I get thosesmaller ones that Target sells at Xmas with red lids. In really desperate straits you can also get those little feet to raise the bed so more will fit - - then just get a bigger comforter or dust ruffle.
I'm in a house but I'm a pack rat so every inch of space is used, especially when DH brought more than 1 suitcase and 2 cats when he moved in.
In closets I try to get those mini shelf dodads so I can stack things higher and still get bottom stuff w/o that much of a struggle. depending on how often you use certain items you might try to nest them.

Space saver bags as well for your off season clothes. Our closets are both full of everything else we own!

Re: two people's stuff...one br apartment
DH and I made a compromise. Every 6 months we go through out apt. If we haven't used it or looked at it or worn it in those 6 months (with the exclusion of seasonal items) then it's garbage or a donation.
We have a good amount of storage in our 2 bedroom, but we have still opted to have no clutter. I refuse to move junk we haven't looked at in 2 years into a house..ya know?
Sorry for the ramble..

We also redid all our closets with a shelving system that we bought at the Container Store and installed ourselves.

So the apartment directly upstairs from me is vacant....I wish we could rent it and install a fireman's pole!
