unity candle question

do u take the side candles OUT of the holder to light the middle?

or

do you lift the holder & candle to light
the middle

we took the side candle out since ours was one piece....we forgot to blow out the taper candles too...oops!

you take the side candles out of the holders otherwise there's a chance the candle may tip out of the holder and cause a fright

Funny you should ask, this is where our one wedding mishap happened. The priest came to me as I got out of the limo and specifically said NOT to take the taper out of the holder since it was pretty hard to get in and to pick it up by the holder. Well, when it came time to light the unity candle I did just what the priest said and picked up the candle by the holder and when I tilted it the lit taper fell out onto the altar

I gasped and picked it up quicker than I had ever moved before. My advice, if you can use 2 hands to hold the holder and the candle (see example). Good Luck!
