*UPDATE 2*****Any Dr.'s in the house? I have a Q..

**Update**

So here's the deal. I fainted twice at work yesterday and lately my heart has been pounding out of my chest.. I went to the dr. today and they did an EKG- everything was fine. The only concern the dr. had was that it might be my thyroid, so she took blood and strapped a halter on me to monitor my heart for 24 hours.. I thought it might just be anxiety.. Now, I might have a thyroid issue on my hands.. What's that?? What's hyperthyroid? Ohhhh AND i have an inner ear infection so that explains my dizziness.

Keep your fingers crossed!

Thanks!

- Heather

UPDATE 2: the Dr. called last night. My potassium is low but everything is normal. I go back on Friday as a follow up. I guess it's time to overload my body with potassium..

My mom has hyperthyroid. I dont know much about it, but I know she's been on medication for it for years -- she's healthy and perfectly fine. Dont worry too much. My MIL has hyperthyroid as well and I'm pretty sure its relatively common in women. Keep us updated and take it easy sweetie

I asked Vinny- he's usually good for this stuff.

Hyperthyroid means that your thyroid (which is what controls your metabolism) is producing your hormones, etc (and when I say etc- it is short for a lot b/c your thyroid does a ton of different things)-- but basically, doing everything a thyroid normally does in EXCESS... So, it is doing it more than normal... hence, hyper = faster.

It is easily treated and regulated with meds.

But, because it is hyper, which basically means faster-- that probably explains why your heart was beating quicker than normal.

Vinny said it is better then having 'hypo' which will cause people to gain a lot of weight-- b/c it is the opposite-- no matter what you do or how much you work out-- your metabolism is sluggish.... slower than normal.

HTH!!!!

OOH! He also said don't worry yourself too much- that it is quite common and, with meds to regulate, you will be able to live totally normal. He said lots of people get this.

Hey chica,

Sorry I was away

Ok, so if you are hyperthyroid that means that the palpitations you were feeling are probably due to that. To test for thyroid disease, your dr will do a simple blood test. Then you'll either be given medication to slow down your thyroid or they might give you radioactive iodine (it's not as scary as it sounds ) to make the part of your thyroid that's acting up, slow down.

Please keep me posted. I'm going away this weekend so I wont' be around to answer any questions but i'll make sure to sign on early monday.

Send me an FM if you like.

Here is a good and easy read:

Hey Chica,

I was also just tested for my thyroid this week. My mother has thyroid problems and had 2/3 ofhers removed quite a number of years. It can be regulated with medication. Everything will be fine- stay positive. On another note, having low potassium and an inner ear infection can may you faint. We had a friend that had such a severe inner ear infection that he could barely walk because it throws off your equalibrium. Just get some rest and I am sure everything will be fine!
