UPDATE: Just got bad news

Original post by PeteysBride

One of our dearest friends (he was our best man) JUST now got the call that his mother passed. It was unexpected. He just happened to be on the phone with DH when his call waiting rang. Dh called me right after.

We will be with him and his wife tonight so if I don't see you all have a very happy holiday and please send him all of your prayers and wishes. To lose a parent is awful at any time but its even harder during the holiday season.

Thank you.

Update:

We might be going to the wake tonight. Waiting for the call. His mom was Jewish and Im not familiar with the tarditions myself, but DH said something about the burials traditionally being done quickly. If I am wrong, someone please correct me. She was found it seems a few days after her death...so needless to say its an even harder situation now on our friend emotionally. Thanks for the thoughts and preyaers ladies.

in the jewish religion, after the person is buried, the people that are grieving they sit shiva. you don't send/bring flowers. u send/bring food baskets or deli platter

I'm Jewish.
People need to be buried quickly. Typically within 3 days. THere is NO wake, and typically a closed casket.
People go out the way they came in....very simply. There is nothing ornate or fancy about a Jewish Funeral.
THe immediate family typically go to someones house afterword for an infomral meal which typically includes bagels b/c they are round and symbolize that life is like a circle.
Depending on how religious they are, they will sit shiva. This means that for 7 days, they morn. Mirrors in the home are covered, and men can't shave. Again, this is all depending on how religious they are.
There is no gravestone for a full year. After one year, there is an unveiling where you visit the cemetary for the first time since burial and a stone is unveiled. This unveiling symbolizes that now, mourning must end.
I have never been a religious person, but I must say that having these traditions really helped me with my mother's own passing.
Your friend is in my prayers. Losing your Mom is just awful.

one more thing....never send flowers. It is not appropriate in the jewish tradition.
