I'd like to take a long weekend this fall (cus I have extra days I need to take off from work) and thoght it would be fun to stay somewhere upstate for 2 nights and visit the wineries and go apple picking. What town would be a good place to stay? I was looking at New paltz, but its either really expensive, or like motelish places. Anyone have any suggestions?
TIA!!

Re: upstate wineries
I went to the Niagara Wine Trail last year with some friends for their 'Hallowine' event and it was great. We had so much fun and the ride wasn't too long. We stayed in a Holiday Inn but there are B&B's listed on the website that might be more what you're looking for. Here's the site if you want to check it out.
You should look in the Finger Lakes Region. There are beautiful wineries all along the Seneca and Cayuga lakes. DH and I went to college up there and used to go all of the time. You are sure to love it!

Check out the NY Wine & Grape Foundation site. There are lots of links to the various wineries in the different regions.

Check out the Finger Lake region- they have a ton of wineries and they have some Inns along the lake as well. I went to school in Ithaca and one of our favorite wineries was Lucas.

Re: upstate wineries
i also went to school in ithaca. DH and I went up and down Cayuga Lake tons of times. Ithaca's just a fun little town to visit as well, so you can probably find a nice place to stay and the vineyards are tons of fun! our favorites were hosmer and sheldrake (where we actually had one of our first dates )
