DH and I are both on Verizon, and whenever we travel intenationally we upgrade our data to the international plan. It's pro-rated, so you only pay for the time you are there, and it allows you to get unlimited emails, data, etc.

I have AT&T and their international s*cks! I'm going to Italy with my parents and cousins this summer (no DH) and I wanted to do an international plan. I can pay an upgrade fee but get charged 99 cents a minute OR I can not upgrade to international and get charged 1.99 per minute. My parents and I decided to just use Skpe instead. My dad installed it on all our computers and DH and I are going to set up a schedule so that we can talk to each other. It's the cheapest way and at least we can see each other. Call your carrier and ask about it.
