A few weeks back I posted about starting to think about getting pregnant but really feeling the need to lose weight first.
Well i joined weight watchers the beginning of the month. I'm in my third week. I lost 6 lbs the first two weeks. It really hasn't been to bad. I just joined on line (it's a bit cheaper) but I still get meal plans a journal to log in and a points calculator (they use points instead of calories).
They also have a really great online community with chat boards just like this. There is even a wedding board for brides-to-be (which i'm addicted to also -- love giving advice).
I know I wasn't the only struggling with this so I thought I'd pass along the information. Maybe some of you would enjoy the WW program too. You can check it out at www.weightwatchers.com

Weight Loss
Thanks Stefanie! I've been playing with the idea of joining WW for a while now, but the thing that kept me from doing it was actually goingthere to join! Having an online alternative is going to be great. Good luck to you, and keep us posted with your success! : )

Weight Loss
I lost 37 lbs on WW since November. I will now have to go off with the baby but it`s OK, I was about 10 lbs from my goal. I never felt deprived and ate lots of good stuff. And now with the baby, I am grateful that I did it healthy because my doctor told me to just add a few more calories to maintain vs. losing weight. I already know my food plans are essentially healthy. I definitely recommend it.

Stef,
I also joined online last night!! I have little or no time to get to meetings so I figured it would be good. I have had good results with it in the past, and like the rest of us would like to be a bit slimmer before I get pregnant.

Great News and a Question
I have been on and off weight watchers for years and know that when you stick to it it does work. Here's my question...do you guys think it will make it harder to become pregnant by starting diet and exercise right now? Is it too much of a 'jolt' to the system? This may be a stupid question - obviously the healthier you are the better, but I want to get pregnant ASAP and am worried I might 'throw myself off'. What do you guys think?

Joined last week
I joined last week WITH my husband...We went last night and I lost 4 lbs and He lost 5.4. It is so much easier doing it with him. We want to start to think about children during the summer. I need to lose weight before I have children because it is not healthy to get pregnant at the weight I am at. But let me tell you Mitch is making me nuts .. He loves Food and now he really can't sit down and ust eat...But I think we will both do it because we are doing it together....

Lee - my opinion
I think it's great that you want to join WW to help you reach your goal weight. In regard to your question about 'throwing yourself off' - I think it depends on how extreme you cut fat and calories, and how fast you try to lose weight.
There's no question that you can mess with your monthly cycle by drastically fluctuating your weight and changing your diet. As long as it's gradual, I don't think losing weight should hinder your chances of becoming pregnant. BUT - I'm no expert. You should definitely speak with your doctor about your concerns.
Best of luck with weight loss and conceiving!! :)

Lee - I agree w/claud
Yes! speak with your doctor. Its good to let him/her know you are planning anyway.
With regard to WW I've always been told its just a healthy way of eating, which it is. As long as the you are not starving yourself and getting the proper nutrients while shedding a few pounds I don't see the harm to your system.
Think about how long it can take someone with an eating disorder to show signs of shutdown. ie loss of menstruation, etc... It doesn't happen overnight and thats after depriving the body of what it really needs.
Listen to me, what am I talking about. When I stop eating Twinkies for dinner then I can give out advice!

my experiences..& news
I did WW about a yr b4 the wedding. It was not easy..but I was able to join at wrok..and a co-worker of mine joined with me & we helped each other.
Also joined a gym at the time that was right across the street from work.
Those two things, along w/ WW made it a success.
Now, I am back up to my pre- WW weight and very unhappy.
Since I gave up chocolate for Lent, and Fridays are fish days for me, I am hoping that this will jump start me.
The only prob is there is no gym anywhere near me at work or home..and working from 8 until 10pm doesn't help.
argh- guess I am having a 'blue day'
AND we are ALSO trying to get pregnant!
SEND BABY DUST MY WAY!!!!!!

Weight Loss - Weight Watchers
Me too! I joined Weight Watchers a month ago, and I've already lost 11.4 pounds. I had joined WW about two years ago, had lost 40 pounds, but that was before the wedding, and I gained it all back (dammit). But, this time, I'm changing not only my eating habits, but my LIFE STYLE. I'm now also exercising three times a week, and am more conscious about what I'm putting in my mouth and doing to my body. I too want to lose weight before I can even think of getting pregnant (but then I'm afraid that I'll gain the weight again).... aaaah, the trials of being a woman these days!!! Good luck to all of us!

And another thing...
Although I'm not a serious cook or anything, I've been getting the 'Cooking Light' magazine, and they have TONS of really great, easy, low fat recipies. You can get so many of these recipies online too. Check it out - it really helps with the WW!!!
