weird question

Original post by SFAR89

Last night DH and I went out to dinner with a few friends in the city.

The bill comes, and we all put in our money. DH paid for us and included the tip. The other 3 paid what they were supposed to and put in their amounts.

Before we left, the waitress came back to the table and said 'I just wanted to know if there was a problem with the service? Was everything okay?' and we said 'yeah, it was fine'. She then said 'Well, you only left me 9%'. I was MORTIFIED. I didn't know how much the other guys had put in, and I figured with our money and the money they put in, it should've been more than enough. I am usually in charge of counting the money, but DH's friend has a disability and doesn't have full use of his hands, and he was counting the money, and I didn't want to say in front of everyone 'Here let me get that' or something like that, so I just left it alone and figured they would do the right thing.

I kind of want to know what you would've done in a situation like that. Would you have been as mortified as I was, or would you have been angry that she said something about the tip that you were giving her???

I think what really annoys me about how this situation went down is because you never asked why when she asked about the service. You said yea it was fine... so why she had to throw in that comment of leaving 9%.. i don't understand...

Because sometimes people 'forget' simple math when it comes down to the tip.

Could she have left out the 9% yes, but then they would not have known about the problem with the tip and she would have worked her butt off for 9%... which to me is LESS than HALF of what she should have received easily.

Don't get me wrong.. I am not saying she doesn't deserve it, Im sure she worked her butt off for it esp. being in the city and dealing with all kinds of people.. But I don't feel she went about it right.. JMO

Whoa...I Would have personally been totally embarrassed bc I always tip well. It is ballsy of the waitress to say 'bc you tiped X amount' BUT this is her lively hood and she felt stiffed. If I were the server I wouldn't say anything bc it's not like they left nothing, just not enough.

From what you are saying it sounds like she was going about it the right way in the beginning. She asked if there was a problem with the service and then when YOU ( or whoever ) asked Why? then she brought up the tip.

Don't get me wrong, my DH would have probably freaked out anyway BUT I would also be mortified that we didnt leave enough. I am an overtipper though.
