according to my faith, polygamy is pretty much the complete opposite to the definition of marraige lol..so no - i dont really agree with it. but hey - every religion & belief system is different... for ME?? naah - marraige equals the union of ONE man, ONE woman, and God.
HEEELL NO i ain't sharin' my man!!

It's a pure male power and ego trip. It is so scary that they can have such control over these women. I really don't know what to think, but a 16 year old girl should not have 3 children. They live such a simple life in the name of religion, as do the Amish, but this sect uses religion to condone sex with minors and bigamy to produce as many children as possible. Yet, they cannot financially take care of them.
It's just scary. At what point does inbreeding begin ?

AMEN! lol.
Seriously...I understand the argument of 'It takes a village to raise a child' and all but I don't know how great it is for the kids in all honesty...early marriages, many children before they are even 18...the emotional stuff is HEAVY...
But again I don't know much about it so I have to see what other people share info wise before I can make an intelligent argument either way.

Re: What are your thoughts on;
You guys should definitely read Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer. It's an EXCELLENT book, though disturbing, as it goes into great detail regarding these radical, fundamentalist sects of mormonism. These people are like, shocking, in how devoted they are to their faith and how they use it to justify things like, polygamy, marrying children, violence in the name of god....it's crazy.

when i clicked on this, i also took a peek at the book listed along with it called 'ESCAPE'...it's actually an auto-biography of a woman who lived through it and got herself along with her 8 children out of it...looks really interesting.

ITA. One of the best non-fiction books I have read.

Ooh, yeah definitely try and pick it up....the beginning is a little rough because it's violent....but it sets the stage for all the research that went into the book...the whole religion is just......shocking, but so interesting in its justification. He also wrote Into the Wild, another great book, about that guy that basically dropped out of society and just became a wanderer...it just came out as a film..I think he's a great non-fiction writer.
I personally don't agree with polygamy.....but it's weird when you watch these women...there was one recently on Oprah...a very modern family, not like the people on the compound recently raided....but they're on all other accounts a very normal family...but there's 3 wives and they seem really well-adjusted....I just don't get how that's possible......

totally. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in those homes...not the ones on the compounds but the homes in anytown, USA where there's polygamy going on behind closed doors (like in that show Big Love) and see what it's really like for them. The ones who have to hide it and their kids have to hide it because they're supposed to appear 'normal' to their neighbors and friends and co-workers. It's got to be so strange...it's basically a double life.

yes...i'm very curious. i just see a lot of the ego & control thing going on which really bothers me...but i guess u choose to live that life.. i dont know.. i've seen women come in to get their makeup done at my shop with COMPLETELY controlling husbands that u can tell put fear in them..and a majority of the time it has to do with their way of life...be it their backround or religion... i feel so sorry for them because they really dont know anything else..

I read that, it was such a great book! But I dont think evey polygamist family lives that way-for example, the people on the Oprah show. The 'modern' polygamist on the Oprah show said that she feels that other alternative lifestyles are accpeted by the public, why not hers? I understand her point. I think its fine as long as youre not abusing your children and your wives like they do on these fundamentalist compounds.
