What do you say when someone complains about the temp of your home?
Recently I have received complaints from my MIL, my brother and a friend that my home is too cold. DH gets warm very easily (he is a big guy) and I personally like wearing warm, snuggly sweaters so I am not bothered by a cool home.
What do I say to these people who want me to turn up the heat and sit in the jackets complaining about how cold it is?

My sister said to me recently, I told her that she can turn up the thermostat.... when she pays my energy bills.

you say, do want to borrow a sweater?
If they are already wearing jackets, I would turn up the heat just for the time they are there.
I had the oppostite problem, when we first move dinmy MIL was complaingin how hot it was, and it was, btu we were moving in! we hadn't gotten around to shutting off all the radiators yet. So I told her she could open the window.

I would turn it up when they visit. I'm always cold and it's very hard to have a conversation, concentrate on anything, etc, when you're cold!

If it's just for a visit, then I would turn it up, it's for a guest. Other than that. I like to snuggle up with a blanket.

You ladies are great. I will have to think of these responses when the next person complains.
I guess part of me is annoyed because my MIL always complains about being cold and she knows that she needs to eat more in the winter (she is too thin) but all she thinks about is being thin and not about her health. And my brother has complained a few times, but only when he has had his new girl with him, who is thin and always cold, yet she wears lightweight or lowcut tops that would make her cold.
I guess I am annoyed because these people won't me to be uncomfortable because they are too self-absorbed to do the right thing.
Thanks for entertaining me with your responses. Keep'em coming!

def tell them bring a sweater next time!! Tell the girlfriend no wonder she's cold, she's half naked.
My inlaws house is either freezing or hot, no in between, so I dress in layers to be ready for any temp. Same with a friends house. it's usually cold so I know to bring a sweater with me. I would never ask to change the temp.
The only people I do complain about the temp with is my parents. Because its ok for me to be a whiny brat with them. LOL

I want my guests to always be comfortable in my home. If a guest complians- I do what ever accomidates them.
I would hope that if I was at a friends/relatives house and was freezing/sweating someone would accomidate me.

I think I would probably try to make them comfortable - but I am always cold, so even if they were cold, I 'd probably be too so I wouldn't mind upping it for them.
I don't think I would ever tell anyone else that I was cold in their house and they should turn it up for me. Well, except maybe my dad - and my brother - I alwyas tell him it's too cold!! But, it's more like a joke with us. Actually, it IS always too cold in his house, but he just throws me a sweatshirt and gives me slippers for Christmas and tells me to suck it up

my parents house is ridiculously cold that i try not to go there during the winter. honestly, in my opinion, if you are going to host an event and invite people into your home, you should make them comfortable. my grandparents do not visit them during the winter and my brother will not bring his kids by until it gets warmer outside.

I would make it a little warmer when you know they are coming over.
I don't think I would ever have the nerve to say something, in someone else's home. However, my sister's house is always ice cold. BIL is very tight! I don't say anything. Mom gives me a nod when she is freezing and I go and lean on the thermostat and accidentally turn it up

i'd make it a little warmer.. since i would want them to feel comfortable....its only for a few hours when they are over and it doesnt have to be turned very hot, just a little bit more than usual.

I agree - I hate being cold. In my house we don't keep the heat that high but its not uncomfortable.
My SIL keeps her house FREEZING and I hate going over there because I'm always uncomfortable (even though I bundle up in heavy sweaters and a scarf). Doesn't help that she makes us take our shoes off so my feet are always so COLD!
I like to make my guests comfortable, so I'd turn the heat up.

Most of the time it is my family - and in that case I point them to where the blankets are. heehee!
