Some of us may have known instincutally what we would do when we grew up. Some of us had an idol (like a teacher), or had an innate talent (singing, acting, etc.) Some of us figured it out along the way, and others of us are still figuring it out. What's your story?
I'm in advertising sales. Growing up, I was obsessed with advertisements. I'd buy magazines, just for the ads. I even walpapered my room with the Swatch and Absolut campaigns, and eagerly awaited the next one in a seriies. I sort of followed that, and now I'm in magazine advertising sales.

Re: What made you choose your profession?
Since I was a little girl I said that I wanted to be a teacher. So naturally I grew up and went for it, got my Masters while subbing, went the whole 9 yards. Then I got a teaching job, taught 3rd grade for two years, and discovered I HATE TEACHING!!!!!!
So now I am 26 and back at square one!! I'm so confused and don't know what I want to be when I grow up!?
So right now I'm subbing trying to figure out what I want to do!

Re: What made you choose your profession?
Well I was originally an musical theater actress, traveling with shows. I loved it for a while, though found it at times frustrating and depressing. Right as things were really picking up for me career-wise, I met DH. Suddenly, being with him and becoming ready to start a family was sooo much more important to me. I knew there was no compromise with me. I wanted a family the way I wanted a family - more than that particular career. So I did some soul searching, and the obvious came to me- teach music! Best thing I ever did! And I realized I didn't have to make my passion for theater a career- I could perform when I choose to, and have fun with it. That took the pressure off...and I finally played a few roles I was dying to play! So it all worked out!

Re: What made you choose your profession?
When I was a kid I wanted to work with animals in Africa but as I got older I discovered theatre and fell in love! I was SO obsessed.
I performed for about 3 years very steadily after college but then things started getting harder. I was in an awful relationship that killed my self esteem and I just felt like I ****** and would never get any where. I quit.
I tried doing a bunch of things: massage school, admin work, thought about going back to school for teaching...Then I met DH....I couldn't talk about my 'old life' without sadness.I felt empty and lost. I went to see Light In The Piazza with him about a month into our relationship and I cried through the whole show. I missed it so much. It was painful and very hard to watch.
That night DH and I had a long talk and he convinced me to go back into acting. It's been tough. I was away for almost 4 years but I'm trekking along. Voice lessons, classes, and LOTS of final callbacks but no jobs yet. It will happen. I have the love and support of friends, family and an AMAZING husband. I'm very very blessed.
ETA: That was long! Sorry about that

Re: What made you choose your profession?
sort of fell into it..... I always loved bio and had a talent for it, but when I was an undergrad, I NEVER thought I could become a PhD and do research like the profs.... it seemed like way too lofty of a goal.
after graduation, I became a techie, and was immersed in the lab environment. I eventually wanted to at least TRY grad school (even though I gave myself a 50% chance of completing it )
What do ya know, I actually DID, and am doing reasonably well..... and now am a co-worker to some of my former profs..... wierd how things end up sometimes....

I always loved art...and have been drawing, painting & creating since i could hold a crayon! I knew I wanted to do Graphic Design in 9th grade..when my art teacher Mrs. Reagan clarified exactly what that meant to me...haha...images & text....much like the sketch books I used to keep...i can't imagine doing any kind of job that didn't involve creativity!

Its me Stacey=Dancer MAKEUP ARTST I am an artist. Paint and draw as well as graphic design. That combined with years of stage makeup kinda morphed me into a makeup artist. Now Iove helping people out for their wedding day. Its very special to be a part of one of the biggest days in someones life!!!!
And that was a day in the life of Stacey haaa

I kinda just fell into it...
I was originally a chem. major (I was a science geek), but found in college that it didn't excite me. I then switched over to finance and am now a financial analyst. Is it exciting? Not really. Do I love it? Not r eally.
I'm at a point where I'm thinking of walking away from it and doing something else--the environment is too stifling and I don't like being stuck behind a desk, crunching numbers all day. It's sad, because I don't know what I really want to be when I grow up

Re: What made you choose your profession?
I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.
I studied film in college, spent timepursuing my professional riding / teaching / training horses passion, and then went to law school because I figured it was time to get a real job. I never had any intention of practicing law, but really wanted to use law to carry over to the business side of the entertainment industry. I wound up doing very well in law school and landed a job with a big firm -- so I'm giving it a try for a few years. Almost two years in, and I'm doing okay with it. I like it well enough. I work with really interesting, really smart people, and I LOVE IP work (patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, etc.)... but I'm not sure I'll do it forever. It's in the cards for at least 5 more years I think, maybe longer if I continue to grow to love it.
The hours can be long, though, and the work can be stressful... but it's also usually interesting and challenging which means it's not boring all that often.
We shall see. I see owning a horse farm and vineyard in my future once DH finishes his MBA... I think we're entrepenuers in training!

Re: What made you choose your profession?
I kinda figured it out along the way ....
I was always bad in science, so in high school, I dropped science after my sophmore yr. Instead of science, I filled it up with art - thinking it would be a cool/easy way to replace science. Before taking any advanced art classes though, I had to take 2-D and 3-D art - which was not as easy as I expected. Anyways, I then took computer graphics (which counted as an art class + a required computer class). I found myself constantly going to the lab on my free time to work on my projects, bc it was so much fun and interesting to me to learn how to use photoshop!
Thats what made me decide that I was going to be a graphic designer. i do love it, and I really cant imagine myself doing anything else, but I wish it was as 'fun' as that 1st computer graphics class i took in high school.

I hear you girl...we're in the same boat (same job)...but as frustrating as it is it pays bill. I love to switch and be a teacher but I don't want to get a huge pay cut.

Re: What made you choose your profession?
I don't care for my job at all & it's not my life's work... Its a job for now.
My career was in television... I gave it up to have my son. I always loved making films and videos as a kid and studied it in college. Got a job at a post house after college and kind of worked my way up from there
I'd like to eventually go back to it, but working in the business for 5+ years, turned me off TREMENDOUSLY... plus, its too demanding if I am going to be the mother I want to be to my children.

Re: What made you choose your profession?
for a while i thought id end up in an art-related job. but im in pursuit of becoming a clinical psychologist, 3rd yr in my program. i have always been interested in working in a helping profession. im a people person, analytical (...sometime to a fault). behaviors, emotions, the workings of the mind, how ppl cope differently and what influences that, etc, etc....have always interested me. ppl growing and navigating their way through difficulties...and having some small part in that process...i find that incredibly rewarding!

Re: What made you choose your profession?
i've kinda fallen into my 'career', if you were to call it that, solely through bad luck. i have music performance and finance bachelors degrees and when i graduated from college, i immediately found a job at a non-profit music school that provided free (or heavily discounted) music classes/lessons to kids who couldn't afford it. DREAM JOB! i did a bunch of different things with the school; finance, public relations, teaching, graphic design. . .you name it, i had my hand in there somewhere. i loved getting up and going to work everyday, until one of our main funders decided to pull his funding and the board decided close the school. so, with two week to christmas and no job, i threw my resume at a temp agency and found my current job; working operations in a managed account department for a mutual fund company. but not a day goes by that i don't want my old job back. . .unfortunately, tucson's arts market (and DH's paycheck) are small, so i can't really afford to go back into non-profit right now, but i volunteer a lot!
