What makes a friend a friend for life?

What do you think makes certain friends the kind that are with you for years and years and more years and other friends just people who are special to you for a while?

I am very lucky, I have some very special friends. I think that all of them have very similar qualities. They listen, care about my life, let me share in their ups and downs, and even though we may not always agree (sometimes even get mad) we find a way to talk about the problem and find a solution. We both care about the relationship, it isn't one sided.

I also learned A LOT when I got laid off 2 years ago. There were people who said they were my friends but when I needed them, they were no where to be found. Then there are the 'friends' who just don't want to have to put in any effort, ever. They like to hang-out but not if they have to make the calls or plans.

What do you guys think make your best friends, the best?

A friend for life excepts you just the way you are and never ever judges you.
You make mistakes and they tell you that you are only human.
You have differences of opinions but they always respect you and never tell you they think your wrong.
They are there through the good times and the bad and somehow just always know the right thing to say.
They always have your best interest at heart.
This would be my best friend Lydia..
She is the most wonderful beautiful person I know and she loves me just the way I am

I have many friends, but one best friend. We are 30 and 31 and we have been friends since we rode our hot wheels together up and down the sidewalks since we were 3 and 4 years old!!

A best friend is one who believes in you and stands by you no matter what. A best friend support you in your endevours and is there with you when you succeed and fail. A best friend never judges you and makes you smile. In your times of sadness she knows just what to say.

A best friend stands the test of time and distance. At the age of 14 she moved away with her parents. Through the distance and the years, we have grown closer. I can tell her anything, and she is always the first to know, whether good or bad.

Can you tell how much my best friend Nicole means to me, even though I am here in NY and she is in FL?
