What should I do about this?

What should I do about this?

A good friend of my DH bought us a set of our silverware for our wedding gift, but it was on back order. Now, 3 months later, we get a notice from Macys that the order has been canceled and the set was added back to our registry. I called Macys to find out why and they were very reluctant to get into specifics. They said that the order had been canceled and they contacted DH's friend to tell him so.

We have not heard from DH's friend about this and it has been weeks, nor have we said anything. In the meantime, this is the only thing left on our registry that we need - we were about to close the registry when all of this happened.

I wonder what went wrong and why Macys wouldn't tell me more. I don't think his friend would want to stiff us, but he hasn't re-ordered the gift or done anything about it.

Do you think we should say something or let it go and just order the silverware ourselves?

hmm that is strange, I personally wouldnt say anything and would order the silverware myself. If for some reason your friend did cancel the order, and you ask him about it, it would be really akward for both of you.

I agree, you shouldn't say anything - he'll get a refund, so he'll know you didn't receive the gift.

what pattern was it? was it discontinued? If it wasn't discontinued and if Macy's still carries it, that would mean that he intentionally cancelled the order.

If you really want to get the details, ask to speak to a manager about it.

I'd write them a thank you for the thought but let them know Macy's notified you that the backordered order was not going to be able to be sent. That lets them know you at least are thankful, even if you didn't get it. Macy's has been known to mess things up.

oh, I just had another thought.

I know that when I order something, I give my credit card number, but I don't get charged until the item is shipped.

Could it be that he canceled the old CREDIT CARD and the charge was rejected as a result? Or, maybe his credit card expired in that time?

Re: What should I do about this?

I ordered a gift online from Macy's about a month ago for a friend's wedding. I wanted it shipped to my friend, so the ship to and bill to addresses were different. Apparently it is Macy's policy to call you if the ship to and bill to addresses are different. Well, they called me, got no answer, and left no message, and then cancelled the order. I did not know that the order was cancelled until I checked my e-mail.

I was really mad. Why couldn't they just leave a phone message?

Maybe this is what happened to your friend. One thing to note, however, is that the gift I bought was not off of a registry. I would think that registry gifts should not apply to this policy...

It's possible his friend ordered it somewhere else and is sending it to you and canceled the Macy's order.

Wait a few days more to see.

This had occurred to me too. Well, a funny thing happened. After I posted this topic, I received an email from Macys saying another 5 sets of our flatware had been cancelled. The 5 sets were bought by DH and I as part of our completion of the registry. So I called Macys again to find out what's up and they said that they had sent an email to DH to notify him that it was on back order, and because he didn't respond and say ok, that's fine, they cancelled it.

So I asked the Customer Service agent to look up the set that had been bought by our friend and then cancelled. He recently emailed Macys and told them to go ahead and cancel it, but then he went and re-ordered the set right away. I think the same thing probably happened to him - his order was canceled when he didn't initially respond to their email regarding the back order. And then maybe he got confused so decided to just re-order it from scratch.

Anyway, it now appears that his gift is on order and to be shipped in a few weeks. We feel relieved because he is a very good friend and we had already sent a thank you for it, so didn't understand why it was being cancelled.

So if any of you get emails from Macys about a back order, go ahead and respond right away or they might cancel an order!

I was actually thinking that maybe it was on back order and when it came in, his card was declined without him knowing. is that a possibility? I might say something, y not. nothing to lose. I am sure he would rather know then not know. Also, if he had a problem with u that he cancelled it, wouldnt u like to know that too? I think if u dont say anything u r th only person losing out. Be honest with him.
